What about the Turkish grievances?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Two more points (and a chopped off finger)

Postby LANDJO » Thu May 05, 2005 11:49 am

Ha ha ha ha

If you're not a Turkish Cypriot I'll chop my own finger off.

Ha ha ha ha

Carry on

Ok, please do.

I am starting to realize that it is completely impossible to be neutral on this island. You will get accused of partisanship from both sides. Indeed, even the man hailed as one of the greatest diplomats and the head of an organization which, in its resolutions, had previously favored the GC point of view, Mr. Annan, is a Turklover. Why should I be able to do any better?

First of all, someone mentioned that there has been an official GC acknowledgement of the pre 1974 events. I have not been able to find anything on this. Could you please tell me when, where, and send me a link to the statement?

Second of all, a GC born in 1974 said that the pre 1974 events should be forgotten and that Cypriots should move ahead. That is fair enough. No one wants to harp on the past. But are not all TC going to say that the pre-1974 events are exactly what caused the current situation? Will that not lead to irreconcilability? Would you then not commit the same mistake as Turkey is with regard to the Armenian issue?

LANDJO,

Can we infer from your post that you regard the events prior to
1974 as genocide solely orchestrated by one side?
If this is the case (and please correct me if I wrong) I find this to be a very one-sided view of the events. A quick read of the cyprus-conflict website will show that this was not the case. I accept that the Greek Cypriot administration have a lot to answer for in the period 1963-1974
but all I will say is that it takes two to Tango. I do accept, however, that the TC community bore the brunt of the events due in part to the numerical majority of the GCs which allowed them to effectively dominate the island during this period. We need to move on, not so that the past is
forgotten or somehow ignored but to mutually agree that in the past we did not want to work with each other whereas now we do. This is the difference between the 1960s and the present day.

No, you can not infer that from my post. I was not trying to make any kind of claim - only ask why, in the rhetoric from the GC side (at least that written in English), there is no sign of an official response to the grievances of the TC community.

Some GC commentators on this side have admitted responsibility for the events leading up to 1974, and that is of course a conciliatory sign. But in the rhetoric on the Cypriot goverment web site or in the Papandopolous friendly Cyprus Weekly, I have not managed to find a trace of it. In fact, the former refers simply to sporadic bursts of intercommunal conflicts...

LANDJO,

Apologies for infering things from your post you did not intend.
I made the inference from your post's last paragraph which seemed to imply that the events of 1963-1974 were solely orchestrated by the machinations of the GC administration, and thus the need to forget or at best 'gloss over' them. The point I was trying to make was that these events were not one-sided, that people from both communities suffered. Also if you are going to be objective in your analysis of the Cyprus issue compare the rhetoric of the RoC with regards the events of 1963-1974 with those of the TRNC with regards the 'peace operation' of 1974. Very similar selective historical interpretations.
Both sides need to stop hammering out this rhetoric and focus on what we have in common as people in the 21st Century.

LANDJO,

50% of the discussions in this forum deal with the questions you asked. You are not expecting anyone to make a summary for you are you? Read the forum, follow the discussions and you will get your answers.

In my opinion it is very disturbing and selfish for new members after a couple of posts creating supposely new discussion topics which are NOT NEW AT ALL.

*********************************

The following is a general observation not necessarily addressed to Landjo

[color=blue] The admin must do something about it.I mean a member must first prove his dedication and sincerity to the forum by having posted at least 100 posts before be allowed to create new threads. For example the Akritas Plan was being discussed just 2 days ago between Erol and Othellos!
Secondly I noticed most of the new members simply post provocations.Should those be a TOPIC for discussion as well?

Let me ask you something:When was the last time your side went anywhere and admitted that the GCs suffered.Or perhaps you think the only and absolute suffering was yours? When did your side explained the facts truthfully, when they called the 1974 invasion a "peace operation" perhaps? And how do you guarantee us such a "peace operation" will not happen again- by insisting on the unilateral right of Turkish guarantees? And how you propose you give us back our properties our lands and homes that presumably seem to be the only thing you needed to "prosper and live in your peace"?

Your president says there are no TCs killed between 1963-1974, what are you talking about reeee? (as you would say) Your side still doesn't accept what the Akritas plan stood for, your side still calls EOKA murderers freedom fighters and give them honorary medals to honor their murders!! The "freedom of speech" in the south doesn't allow a documentary about TC sufferings to air on any TV!!! And you ask us to call Turkish intervention an invasion and occupation in the name of explaining facts truthfully??

Thanks Metecyp for proving my point that neither your side ever explained the facts truthfully.
The same reply goes to the originator of the thread.

So why do you accuse us on the first place reeeee?  :D:D :D
