WARFARE AND THE GLOBE
If history has shown the observer one thing, it is that war is a part of life. Strange as that may sound, documented records report only 300 years of known peace on our planet, leaving the rest to wallow in the path of war. What that statistic tells us is that there has been some source of conflict - be it religious, territorial or otherwise - between two or more parties on our planet for thousands of years. GlobalFirepower (GFP) provides a unique analytical display of information based on sources from all over the globe. Our information is broken down into five major categories shown below. More countries will be added to the site as information becomes available.

I cannot reconcile bravery with military technology.

Remember the 'Brave' USA navy shelling Beirut from 100's of miles away?

Wrong poll.

Go back to the Korean war, and excluding the USAF, the ground forces were the brave ones. Among the bravest and the most heroic were the (numerically small) contingents from Turkey and Greece. (not from Turkish sources). Nowadays who can tell. How far away are the 'commanders' from the battlefield?

But then again what about the stand of the gloucester regiment in Korea?
Now forever known as the glorious Gloucesters..their bravery in fighting when surrounded should not be forgotten.
Forget Americans as ground forces - they simply rely on firepower and as history has shown everytime they encounter a well armed organised enemy they are in trouble. And forget the USAF. in the first iraq war those bloody cowboys killed more British troops that the enemy did, and tried just as hard in the second...a fact that has never been forgotten in the UK.

I do not mean to belittle any land forces of the Korean war. Just the two I mention as interested parties.

The British army in the field has proved its worth many a time. As a student of the Battle of Waterloo, I have admiration for the Infantry divisions all across the board. 'Bravery' was mentioned at the beginning of the thread, thats why I get a bit picky with 'warfare' and 'bravery'..

In Turkish the saying goes ' silah icad olundu, mertlik bozuldu'. Trans,'firearms are invented and 'heroism' is vanquished.

Now we are all talking modern technological warfare.

Not arguing with you Denizaksulu you make a perfectly valid point, i was just pointing out a famouse battle from the same war...take away technology and i have great admiration for the Zulu nation and their bravery fighting the British in South Africa.. when i see them dancing these days it still have the hairs stand up on the back of my neck....

halil, that list in no way indicates who has the best armed forces.

This part of your post says it all:

4 votes for the US??? That's generous (very)!!!

Must be 1 vote for starting wars where they really should have kept their noses out, another for being extremely accurate when targeting friendly forces, the third for the ability to entice other countries into the conflict by stating it's for the global good and the last one for being over generous when it comes to giving out medals (they give one for just crossing the atlantic!!!!!). BA only give a bag of peanuts!

Halil, the original post stated "technology, training, bravery, experience etc" and your links, as far as I can see, I may be wrong, only include the technology factor. The links don't include bravery, training quality and experience in conflict. As I say, I may be wrong but I can't see it.

halil I have been to that website a long time ago. It is utter crap. Most of it goes by pure numbers alone. For example, the British Armed Forces would wipe the floor with Turkey. And yet if you read that website, you would think it would be the other way around.

Simon,
i am no army expert . i didn't make any comment as well . even i didn't vote to any countries .
war is very bad thing .... you never know what will happen ...

i have seen 3 times in my life . İt was always bad .....

people are dying good for nothing . this world is big enough for everybody.

specially in Cyprus we don't need this kind of the arguments , now both sides are trying to find workable solution in Cyprus we must think good things . not increasing tensions between people of the Cyprus at the end we have choice some how we must carry on our lives . we must carry it without fear and trust to each other .
