Halloumi recrods from 1560

Postby Nikitas » Sun May 11, 2008 2:14 pm

On RikSat two nights ago there was a historian who describd how records in the Venice library refer to Halloumi, by that exact name, in 1560.

According to the expert, a lady whose name I cannot remember, the Venetian noble Leonardo Dona decided to study the customs and ways of Cypriots and he made copious notes. In these notes there is a reference to Halloumi in 1560, a decade before the Ottoman invasion.

Leonardo Dona intended to collate his notes in a book on Cyprus but he was killed in Nicosia in 1571.

Seems now he is extracting his revenge. His records will be used to protect Halloumi as a national cheese of RoC.

You can never have too much evidence to help back you up against the revisionists. With all the TC talk on the forum, I was feeling guilty about eating halloumi ..... never again. :D It is well and truly ours. Well done Nikitas!

I'd say that Italy now has a strong legal claim to Halloumi given that Cyprus was under Venetian rule...
