Don't know much about Orthodox weddings, but here in the North the couple are usually married (civil ceremony) at the venue where the wedding feast is held. There are 2 types of invite, one is for close friends and family the other is for the whole village!!!! If invited as a proper guest you get the sit down meal etc etc but if your an evening only, "block" invite, you only get a small cake and a soft drink - both types of guest give money which is pinned on the bride and groom. I have only been to a couple - but I was told that they were quite typical.

GG, you can go round the corner to Kiosk:

and purchase one of their tasteful wedding gifts for your friends:

- a vintage Swedish candy bag
- a disco-inspired Mexican bicycle light, or
- a Bavarian cuckoo clock

Classy, huh?

Weddings in the USA sounds very much like the UK, church wedding, followed by a hotel reception with a sit down meal, cocktails while you wait for the bridge and groom to get to the hotel.

number of guest usually about 150 some times it could be less and some times could be more, it depends on how much cost and who is paying.

yes the English bridge does throw her bouquet over her shoulder, but the groom doesn't usually throws the garter (not from the weddings I have been to)!

with regards to Cypriots weddings well they are different:
I have been to 3 weddings since i have been in Cyprus,

the first was in Larnaca 8 years ago, very posh wedding, I didn't go the church, just went to the evening bit, and this is what i saw,
i cant remember which way around it was,
but the grooms parents and the bridge parents and the bridge and groom stand in a line welcoming their guest, like they do in England,
you go along shaking hands with the wedding party you give your envelope over discretely which may or may not have any money in it. And then go off looking for anyone you know, and you can be standing around for hours, but usually Cypriots go in shake hands hand over the envelope, have a quick drink bit to eat and then their gone.

The Second wedding was in Limassol, 4000 thousand people went to this one, this was in 2003, I have never seen so many people this was very traditional Cypriot wedding where they pined money on the bridge and groom, (you must have seen that) if you haven’t hire that movie (My Big fat Greek wedding) its very much like Cyprus today and that’s the truth. I think that wedding was a money exercise they invite everybody and their wife, kids an all.

The 3rd Wedding was another posh one, but this time I went to church bit,
Well I was disgusted it was like a cattle market, people were talking in church walking in out of the like it was a supermarket, there was no respect for the bridge and groom what so ever. I personally walked out of church in disgust, this would never happen in England church’s they usually shut the church doors when ceremony starts to keep the bed sprites away (well that what they say)

GorillaGal
I know to many people,

It was held at a place called Fantastico, some locals may know of this place. the food was nice and the drinks were free what else could you ask for.

what ever you decide to do for your gift, the bridge and Groom will love it, its the thought that counts.

All the best.

What is a decent amount (in euros) to give as a wedding gift to a close friend? I don't want to look "cheap", and i don't want to overwhelm, but i do want to make a decent, slightly above normal gift.
thanks,
GG
