AK Party closure a sure thing, says former minister A newspaper columnist and former Education Minister Hasan Celal Güzel has stated that the Constitutional Court would certainly shut down the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) because such a move would enable the establishment to maintain its grip on power.
Güzel was speaking at a symposium organized by the Anatolian Lions Businessmen’s Association (ASKON) when he referred to a lawsuit filed by a state prosecutor in late March that seeks to close the AK Party, saying:
“You should understand that the possibility of the AK Party being shut down by the court is not 99 percent, but 100 percent. What are these people -- fools? Will they first make it look as if they are closing the party and then not close it? If that happens, the AK Party will add another 20 percent to its votes,” Güzel said, implying that the establishment would never let that happen. The AK Party was re-elected to a second term in June 2007 after garnering 47 percent of the popular vote. Expressing his view that Turkey is undergoing a time of crisis, Güzel said illegitimate forces within Turkey are struggling to take over the state, thus strong-arming the nation. Güzel said this is how the case against the AK Party should be understood. “This is not a legal case but a major perversion. Unfortunately, a lawsuit has been filed through the politicized judiciary. In reality, as has happened in the past, this aimed to ‘teach the politicians’ their place. What is more important, it aims to teach the people their place, too,” he said.
He also criticized the Republican People’s Party (CHP) in his speech, saying that the despotism of its leader, Deniz Baykal, has been in place for years. “It is a despotism that cannot come out of the ballot and is one that actually consciously hates the people.” He also accused the CHP of provoking some segments in the military who would like to stage a coup.
The damage of a potential coup
Güzel also talked about the prospects of a military coup in Turkey as he explained that a severe economic crisis would be inevitable if a coup were to take place. He made clear that he did not have any intention of scaring anyone about the likelihood of an economic crisis. However, he said: “A coup brings along an economic crisis. I do not mean to scare anyone, but a very severe economic crisis awaits Turkey if the AK Party is closed,” Güzel said.In this respect, he suggested that those who rule out the prospects of a coup in Turkey on the grounds that Turkey has engaged in globalization are mistaken in their claims. Yet, he claimed that the Turkish public would not easily surrender to the perpetrators of a military coup this time.
“Coup supporters should know that the Turkish public will not surrender to them easily. Today’s public is different from the public of the 1960s. Everyone should take steps while bearing this in mind. A military coup in Turkey now means Turkey’s division. Everyone should know this and act accordingly,” noted Güzel. He also ruled out allegations that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan would do nothing against the threat of his party’s closure, as was the case with Welfare Party (RP) leader Necmettin Erbakan in the past. “I had the chance to know Erdoğan. I do not think he will act like Erbakan. If he does, then curse him. I don’t think he will ever surrender,” added Güzel.
