Guidence needed

Postby kirstyscaife » Wed May 07, 2008 11:12 am

Hi Everyone,
I've recently moved to Cyprus and im living in the Dhekelia garrison. Before I came I heard so many stories of how some cypriots were cruel and unkind to animals and also how people from the british forces obandon dogs/ cats when they leave the island....BFAWS (British Forces Animal Welfare) used to be funded by the army but recently this funding has stopped, they provide a kennel service and also take in stray dogs and cats. I have recently been helping out and adopted a georgeous dog and the staff couldn't have been friendlier...ok i willget to my point now.I reallywant to raise some money for BFAWS so they can continue to do a great job and thought about a sponsored walk, im talking several miles as far as I can go.....can anyone offer any advice on routes or even if it's possible. I'd love to take my dog Joey along with me which may cause problems with borders??? Any suggestions, support, help would really be gratefully received. Many Thanks in advance Kirsty x

Unless you are crossing over the north border you will have no problems taking you dog i should imagine.

Yes you are right.. Some Squaddies do dump their dogs up there all the time. Just a few months ago when 2RRF was leaving we found a husky tied up to a post and left by the owners.. they said they couldn't afford to take it back with them so they were leaving it there hoping someone would take her in... eventually someone did. These people were reported but nothing was done about it.

Can you believe that when we arrived we were asked to sign a form to say that we would take our washing machines with us when we left but no such document for a living, breathing animal. Im looking into having some legal document drawn up so that it's the same for a dog which in my eyes is much more important than a washing machine.!! Thank you for your response, it's the start I needed a long way to go but the first step has been made.! Anymore advice on routes etc would be great ofif oyu know of anyone that can help.
Regards- Kirsty

The British forces have their own relocation service for squaddies wanting to take their pets with them when they move elsewhere with the army.

BARC offers a relocation package with squaddies being able to make regular payments into a fund so they don't have to pay a big chunk out when it's time to go on to pastures new.

BARC also rehome cats and dogs that haven't gone with their owners.

Barc re homes animals that have been dumped and left by their cruel and ignorant owners. They are a good organisation. The British go on about Cypriot cruelty to animals, but please kick the British Army up the arse to take resposibilty of there own.
Charge these ignorant squaddies and their families, you know who they are !!!!!
