I love triantafillon/rose water on my mahallebi.

What is the breakdown of the Greek word for rose water.

'trianta' sounds like 'thirty', but what does 'fillon/phyllon mean. In biology it would mean a branch (phylum), is it the same word?

Thank you everyone for your help.

Pantheman, you are right, they are ice-cream flavours.

Dangaman - No, I'm not going into the ice-cream business. I'd end up eating my profits. Its a favour for somebody who sells them, they want me to translate for them....why me, my Greek is poor!

I would agree that triantafillo = 30 leaves

But Deniz has erroneously jumped to phylum which is the next major Biological division after Kingdom.

I always assumed it was some Latin for branch, (due to ending in -um). So I've just looked up the etymology; and phylum is from the Greek "phylon" meaning a tribe or clan. (Which I suppose connects with "friend" also .... assuming your friends came from your tribe :) )

They are actually three different words, φύλλο (leaf), φυλή (tribe) and φίλος (friend)

So I guess I did a Deniz quantum leap and erroneously connected friend with tribe ....

What a captivating language ..... long may it reign supreme!
