Sotos, you say that the Athenian will need to make an effort, but can I presume from this that he will understand the Cypriot well enough to hold a conversation? Or will the conversation simply break down due to misunderstandings?

By my experience it will break down. Words used every day in Cypriot are completely foreign to Greeks. (Thoro...instead of Vlepo. Vourro...instead of treho)

It will break down if the Cypriot wants it to, sometimes you bastards do it on purpose

Άτε σιόρ πουδαμέ! 8)
Isn't that amazing?

AlexISS, can a native Greek read and understand the Greek used in the New Testament then? I.E. can a modern Greek speaker understand "Hellenistic" or "Koine" Greek?

I am trying to learn Greek and just have a few questions I am hoping you bright lot can help me with!

Firstly, can a Greek (say from Athens) understand a Greek Cypriot, and vice versa? Basically, are the Attic and Cypriot dialects mutually intelligible?

Also, can a native Greek speaker really understand ancient Greek, i.e. that used to write the New Testament?

Thanks guys in advance!

I am fascinated by the Greek language and look forward to your replies!

A Greek from Athens may understand a Greek Cypriot, unless the later uses a heavy Cypriot accent and a lot of idiomatic expressions particular to Cyprus. A Greek Cypriot will more easily and under most circumstances understand a Greek from Athens, mainly because what is taught in Greek Cypriot schools or used in GC media is the universal standardized Modern Greek version of the language.

Attic is a term used for the standardized ancient (not modern) Greek language!

A Modern Greek person will understand ancient Greek with great difficulty, unless he has studied and learned ancient Greek! However, the opposite is truer, i.e. an ancient Greek person would probably understand Modern Greek much easier, i.e. grammar, syntax, etc, with the exception of the new words that were added to the language during the centuries that have passed until our times.

Hi Oracle,

the word is "Αγγούρι" but I would most probably call the Cypriot cucumber "Αγγουράκι" because it's much smaller than ours, after all, "ακι" is used to give a diminutive meaning :D

You probably haven't tried those of Chlorakas village in Pafos!

Someone took me to a takeaway kebab shop in a village just south of Nic. last autumn and asked me whether I wanted a Cypriot or a Greek kebab. Wishing to appear patriotic I asked for the CY version. Later as we were munching away I discover the only difference is size. The CY one is jumbo sized.
