Day Trip: Limasol to Lefkhara or Troodos Mountains?

Postby fatboab » Mon May 05, 2008 4:05 am

Hello,

I will be arriving in Cyprus for the 1st time in a couple of weeks for a 7 day holiday :D based in Limassol and would like to hire a car for 1 day to see a wee bit of the Island.

After a bit of research in my guide books I am thinking about 2 options for a day trip.

1.Limassol to Lefkhara and where possible avoiding the main A1 road to pass through Kellaki, Melini & Agios Minas and returning to Limassol.

2. A trip up the Troodos Mountains.

We like to see good scenery, quaint villages and fairly quiet locations. We are not too keen on castles and ancient historical things.

Would it be possible, time wise, to even do the 2 options in one day.

Any thoughts on my options would be much appreciated.

You might be interested to know that there is a public bus from Limassol bus station to Troodos square that leaves at 0930 Mondays to Fridays, with a return journey from Troodos Square at 1530, getting you back to Limassol before 5 o' clock. The return fare is ten euros.

Lefkara can not be done by public transport, though.

I would go for a trip to the Troodos mountains. Lefkara is very touristy and you can't pass a shop without them trying to drag you in.
The villages of Lania, Lofou, Omodhos, Vouni and Vasa are worth a visit. Then you can go up to the top of Troodos.

Personally I prefer Kato Dris to Lefkara. It is near, quieter and has interestic neoclassic buildings, very atypical for Cyprus villages in the mountains. Among the 2 routes I would also vote for a route to Troodos. There are many interesting villages for stopovers...I like the ones suggested by Tim. And there are others as well. Now if you want to walk a bit in nature, there are many trails up in the mountains. Most are easy and relatively short, but some need caution as they are on slopes and you dont want to slip.

You could do it all within 1 day for sure - Troodos and Lefkara, if you want to. It will be a full day, but you can do it with no sweat.

If you like information about nature near Troodos, then search on www.natureofcyprus.org - Try to find nature spots (eg walking routes, waterfalls) within 20 km of Platres (village).

Enjoy your stay

I would like to agree with Carohl, the villages in the mountains are really beautiful, there is also Trimiklini and Pera Pedi to add to those.

Thanks to all for your ideas, much appreciated.

I think I will just concentrate on the seeing the villages in the Troodos Mountains.

Just to get the 1 day car hire sorted now - most hire drive companies seem to want a minimum of a 2 day hire :?

Therefore you must be destined to do both!

Lefkara is a lovely little village and you just have to be resolute and not get dragged in! I have been to Lefkara a few times and had no problems.

Sure there is also now a Wax museum there - or a village nearby. No doubt our Forum Friends could advise!

Continuing with what Phivos said, you can go and visit the Kalidonia waterfalls, a truly beautiful setting and an easy 30 min walk. Or you can go to Trimiklini to see the only double bridge in Cyprus , you can also visit Milomeri waterfalls near platres.

Yes, lefkara is touristy, but the narrow streets of lefkara are good photo-ops. If you want to visit another "cypriot" village, I would suggest Omodhos where you have guided "tours" of traditional cypriot houses still maintained in their original condition.

Next time, ask for half-a-day's hire .... and they will double it to one nicely!
