Luxembourg FM says Turkish accession linked to Cyprus

Luxembourg's Minister of Foreign Affairs Jean Asselborn believes there are indications that the Cyprus problem can be solved and noted that, even though the UN holds the key to efforts for a solution, the EU can facilitate and encourage the two sides on the island towards reaching a settlement.
Speaking after a meeting on Monday in Luxembourg with his Cypriot counterpart Marcos Kyprianou, Asselborn said Turkey's EU accession course was politically linked to the Cyprus problem, adding that Turkey would be able to join the EU only after recognising the Republic of Cyprus.
The two Ministers exchanged views on EU-Turkey relations and developments in the Middle East and the Balkans, and discussed the further enhancement of cooperation between the two countries, especially within the EU.
On efforts to solve the Cyprus problem, Kyprianou pointed out that “we are still at the beginning of the process, which will be difficult and long.”
“We must be patient and should work cautiously and proceed carefully in order to find a solution to the Cyprus question, which is a difficult and complex problem,” he added.
Regarding cooperation between Cyprus and Luxembourg, the two ministers reaffirmed their commitment to continue close cooperation, especially in view of Cyprus holding the EU rotating presidency in 2012.
Kyprianou said Luxembourg was a good example for Cyprus, both being small member states, adding that Cyprus hoped to become “a second Luxembourg” in the EU.
