what bother me is there are people who spell Cyprus like the tree: cypress, or the country Colombia, like the university--Columbia.

Hi GGal

(Have been looking at my semi hairy legs today and I am def. going to spare you a sight of them unless you can convince a lot of other male forum members to do post)

Yes, you're right, even within English speaking countries there are local dialects which make the overall language richer but there is one tiny aspect of US English I must take you to task about.

It's the abreviation for mathematics. We say "maths" and you say "math" ( sounds like an old song ). When said in a sentence your version doesn't sound right.

nope, sorry, it's YOUR version that doesn't sound right.

and i still wanna see your semi-hairy legs!

Look GGal - I'm practically an Englishman, don't you think I have right to keep my legs to myself and to contribute a definitive version of the English Language ?

“Maths” is an abbreviation of the plural word “Mathematics” so it cannot possibly be abbreviated to just “Math”.

and another thing that makes me crazy is those italian-americans who call the red stuff you put on pasta "gravy". gravy is meat based. the red stuff is made from tomatoes and is a SAUCE, even the jarred and can stuff says it is "TOMATO SAUCE" not tomato gravy.

One of mine is that Microsoft, partly through its spell checks, is leading many people into believing that the correct spelling of the word 'colour' should be 'color', 'favour' as 'favor' and more changes besides
If you are using a Microsoft product (eg. Word) then you probably have your regional settings set to US English, not UK English. Control panel should be able to change it. You sometimes can override the default in the individual program too (eg. Word can mark selected text as a different language).

Cheers

One of the things that annoy me are the men who think it is amusing to wind my dog up. He is a black Giant Schnauzer and although they seem afraid to approach - they go on to make stupid noises to get his attention and then Tut their disaproval when he barks!!!
