Cyprus government says new crossing points cannot open immediately

Nicosia, Apr 21 (CNA)--The Cyprus Government confirmed today that the list of crossing points where persons and goods may cross the ceasefire line on the island has been extended, noting however that the two new crossing points cannot open immediately due to technical difficulties.

Yesterday, the European Commission had announced that the list of crossing points where persons and goods may cross the ceasefire line on the island has been extended and it is now up to the two communities to agree on their actual opening. The two crossing points are Zodia, in the Nicosia District, and Ledra Street in the town of Nicosia.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Anyone know what the 'technical problems' are? Is it simply a case of clearing the booby-traps and securing dangerous structures, or is there something more? Personally, I think the opening of Ledra Street would be a massive bonus for both communities (and for my father-in-law who runs a shop along there )

Foreign minister Iakovou said that the Zodia opening is not going to be ready for three more weeks, because construction works are still being carried out, while the Ledra opening may open unofficially, but there still are security issues (for people crossing, due to the condition of some buildings).

So we should see Zodeia open in mid-May then jimmy? I think that's a great location for a crossing, gives easy access to Morfou. How do you think they would regulate the Ledra crossing given the heavy pedestrian traffic that it would see? At least the current Ledra Palace crossing is a bit out of the way, i.e. you have to purposely go there.

Yes, that's what the guy said, referring to 'the official opening of the crossing point' (his quoted statement in Phileleftheros).

Well, Phileleftheros says that the existing list of crossing points has been extended with these two crossing points. Ergo, they should be regulated in the same way as all the others...

Ah, I think I see what you're saying.
Well, I think Ledra street pedestrian traffic is not going to be as heavy as one might expect, because it's not as convenient as the Ledra Palace one, in terms of parking a car. You can park a car essentially next to the crossing point at LP, whereas at LS you'd have to park and then walk for at least 5 minutes to get to the opening.
