CTP-BG SAYS MAJOR OBJECTIVE IS TO BRING ABOUT A COMPREHENSIVE SOLUTION TO CYPRUS PROBLEM.
Today is the 4th anniversary of the day when the UN Peace Plan, or as it was known the Annan Plan, was put to referenda on both sides of the island.
The Turkish Cypriot people overwhelmingly backed the Plan – which was also supported by the whole international community, but the Greek Cypriot Side rejected the plan blocking the way of a solution in Cyprus.
In a statement marking the anniversary, the Republican Turkish Party-United Forces stressed that the struggle continues non-stop towards bringing about a bi-communal, bi-zonal federal settlement in Cyprus on the basis of the political equality of the two sides.
The CTP-BG – which is the senior partner of the coalition in the TRNC - pointed to the importance of maintaining the Turkish Cypriot People’s will towards a solution in Cyprus.
The Party pointed out that a political settlement was very close for the first time with the Annan Plan but reminded that the Plan was rejected by Greek Cypriots, a move, which it said, led to the continuation of the conditions created with the non-solution of the problem.
The CTP noted that the solution of the Cyprus problem will not only bring an atmosphere of peace, stability and prosperity to the island, but also to the whole region.
`The current situation in Cyprus causes strain and uncertainty to relations among Turkey, Greece, the European Union and NATO too` said the statement.
Reminding once again that the Turkish Cypriot People gave a message of peace to the whole world with its approval of the Annan Plan, the CTP stated that the TRNC President Mehmet Ali Talat and the government have been pursuing policies on the basis of this peaceful vision.
In its message, the CTP said, `as a result of audacious policy, the Turkish Cypriot side is no longer treated unjustly at the European Courts and is perceived by the international community as the side having political will for a solution`.
Welcoming the latest developments in Cyprus, the CTP said the fact that the major objective is to achieve a comprehensive settlement in Cyprus should always be kept in mind.
