Very nice Jerry. It has been made by the British for hundreds of years. No hero just enjoying my freedom to shoot legitimate quarry as recognised by the British Government.
Ban, ban, ban that's all I hear coming from the UK, try living in the country where traditions still exist to preserve the balance between nature and humanity...

Ah yes legitimate quarry, does that include cats? Our local gamekeeper used to shoot cats from our village to protect his pheasants, killed one of ours and wounded another, she has survived 18 years on three legs. He thought it was a fox so he kept his job - another hero!

One isolated incident, let's ban hunting... My land borders the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss. I shoot near this reserve. No conflict ensues in fact we work together in land management to encourage species to visit. Tolerance exists between two parties. Tolerance does not exist in Cyprus, the Cypriot population seem to have little or no problem with hunting but the Ex pats seem to get a bee in their bonnet.
Little will change so hunting will continue.
Regarding cats, another species that has not lost it's wild tendancies, born hunter will kill for fun, and genrally plays with it's wounded prey.

Purdey,
My land borders the RSPB reserve at Leighton Moss.
The Silverdale side, Warton or Yealand side ? I know the area very well; in fact I used to know the area like the back of my hand.

Thanks Purdey. Know Storth, used to cycle through there regularly on way up to Lakes. Fantasised about re-opening of railway between Arnside, Milnthorpe and Kendal mainline. Has the railway cutting behind back of Storth been built on now ?

Sorry this is completely off the thread !

The doves are eaten by the locals, or sold to other people in the area.
Yes I eat all I shoot, in the UK every bird shot is eaten that week or frozen for another day.
If you ar a vegan I can understand your point of view, if not and you eat meat I see no difference in the killing of wild birds, and the slaughter of meat for the table, and the wearing of animal products.
In Cyprus doves are not shot on a mass basis, and are not on any protected list. I suggest if you are squirmish or believe the shooting of birds in Cyprus is cruel, you should visit the abbotoir Nr Larnaca. Have you ever seen a cow or pig when it smells it's own species blood, the panic it suffers, the reticense to follow to the slaughter line..not a pleasant sight or to hear the cries these animals make.

Hi Purdey

So the birds of Cyprus do not pose a problem. It is against an EU directive to shoot them, so why bother? (I assume by your above post that you shot so many while in Argentina, yes?)

I am not against shooting and yes, I do eat meat.........................

I do not shoot in Cyprus out of season. I do shoot in season, and doves are among the quarry on the list.
I will not shoot in breeding season and on migration routes.
Re Argentina, and my overkill..the Government were going to gas the forests that housed these doves, but they faced pressure from environmental groups, who then asked for paying hunters to be brought in. So in essence I was supporting the environmental groups of Argentina. Hence keeping down the price of sunflower seeds, hence keeping locals in work, and further enjoying my sport.
