Meeting people

Postby Miajoy » Fri Apr 18, 2008 2:07 pm

I am going to be moving to Cyprus in June and I am a bit nervous as I won't know hardly anybody out there! Is there a group of english people that meet up to socialise? I will be living in Limassol but I can drive so I would be ok to travel a bit. Thanks.

Maria , I take it you are a second or third generation of UK G/Cs . What ever the case moving to Cyprus can be a harrowing experience if you are uncertain as what precisely you want out of Cyprus. As one who has many UK born Cypriot relations that have returned successfully to Cyprus , including my own daughter who is half Cypriot and half English , let me warn you of just some of the pitfalls awaiting Cypriot-connected UK born people.
The first major obstacle you will encounter is your own perception of Cyprus . It has its own identity and very much its own way of life with a very rich and important social life playing a major role in your every day life. Cyprus does things its own way , precisely as the UK USED to do but unable to do so due to the !constraints ! place upon us by the multiracial nonsense .
The Cypriot people , all the Cypriots , are hospitable , helpful and fiercely proud of their way of life.Avoid at all costs telling them that in the UK we do things differently or in the UK this is far better and far cheaper.!! Join English socialite centres by all means but to interact with the locals. My daughter came to Cyprus some 15 years ago , she is 30 now , spoke not a word of Greek , She does now , she also cooks for her husband Cypriot dishes , Kolokasi , Fasolia and generally sees her self as a Cypriot Brit. Have an open mind , not all that is English is perfect and not all that is Cypriot is wonderful . Quality of Life in Cyprus is far more pronounced than that of the UK , given the weather the sea the prominent involvement of Cypriots in all walks of life .
Some UK born Cypriots on returning to the land of their parents expect Cypriots to be " inferior " to them !!!
Do not make this assumption , they are advanced in numerous fields and you take driving out of it , on the whole they are far more educated , knowledgeable and sophisticated than what we in the UK are. That's why I love Cyprus , a modern , sunny , people friendly , and highly developed in every field apart from as I said earlier their bloody driving and filthy smoking habits !! Forgot top mentionthose wonderful family gatherings to celebrate someones name day , birthday , a new baby or a marriage.Great !!

Except human rights, treatment of animals, xenophobia, homophobia, racism and the fact that they've only just worked out how to flush toilet paper (if there's any water to do it) ....... hmmmmmm

I've just seen this ... and this is by far the best and most accurate post Miltiades has ever made ...

Take heed people ...

Cypriots are educated, sophisticated, moneyed, knowledgeable yet find the time to socialize, connect and cook!

Nowhere else is this possible in the whole wide world!
