My wife is from Cornwall. Its funny that we were talking about Cornwall with our neighbor, who also is from there. She has never once mentioned moving there. I am touched by your concern re our future, but why dont you suggest Cyprus. This poor soul will not steel your bitter lemons.

Norwich is absolutely lovely too

.... seriously though I will give you a guided tour of our area when you are over in the summer .... and I shall make some lemonade with canderel just for you!

Aw, thanks O. I have toured the Norwich areas and Cambridgeshire (first choice). I am interested in Cambourne. New developments seem fine there. Decisions, decisions.

I do like the Lake district, but with the fine weather currently in the south-east, we will be taking a drive towards Whitstable, but the proximity to Canterbury is putting me off. (undsirables present, not because of Oracles suggestion)

I was hoping O would invite me to move to the Paphos region.

Deniz, if you ever moved to Paphos, you will never want to live anywhere else again.

...imagine, in 1974 the best was Famagusta, and Paphos was a sleepy village to us in the Karpas or from Trodos, we saw it as dead poor.

The Locals (Paphites) in the old days, were renowned as being the thugs and thieves of Cyprus. IMO this hasn't changed too much but the influx of outsiders have made the locals a minority now. Famagusta really was the best and still can be one day.

I am Spartan in my heart. What is riches. You dont take the riches with you on your final destination. At high school the most generous students were what we called Bafidis. They would come to their lodgings with their food baskets and share everything they had. Not so the city dwellers. I am proud to call myself of 'peasant' extraction. The 'Bafidis' are good people and surely they are proud people and loved their'homes towns'.

Does anyone remember the "Bocachio" (not sure of spelling) coffee bar/restaurant in Famagusta, they had a great band there called "Pitsikas and his Macedonian Quartet". We used to love that place, cant't remember the name of the road. I'd give anything to see Famagusta the way it used to be, happy days!

I don't remember that one but I remember the "Aristocats" and the "Isadoras" used to play there.

So you know the place, I think Pitsikas played there in 1967/68.

No, sorry Jerry. The club was called The Aristocats and the band was called The Isadoras. This would have been the early 70's.

Jerry wrote:Southend doesn't compare to the delights of my home town of Herne Bay. It had the second longest pier in UK until a storm damaged it. There was a paddle steamer that sailed every day from Southend to Herne Bay called the "Medway Queen". I don't feel comfortable saying this but I've been on the Medway Queen loads of time, even went up the estuary on her. Back in the 60s, despite the pebbles, you could not find a place to park your deckchair in the height of the summer. Now its all gone, no pier, no pavillion, no Cypriot restaurants, no hotels, no holidaymakers, no pedalos, no boat trips but worst of all no Medway Queen. I asked a friend once "what destroyed Herne Bay?" after a while he replied "the jet engine", think about it, it's true.

I went there two weeks ago house hunting. We found it unsuitable. No Cypriot shops in sight, apart from a GC fish and chip shop - which is anathema.

Well Deniz if I'd known that you could have called in for tea. (actually I now live 20 minutes from HB) Herne Bay is full of people who moved there for their retirement, sometimes called Hernia Bay. Whitstable has a bit more charm and not quite as depressed but its generally more expensive 'cos wealthy Londoners are buying second homes in the town. Margate is full of GCs but the town is quite depressed, Broadstairs is a better choice. If you want any advice on the area contact me, there are some really nice rural locations and a few to avoid.

You are right about the much older folk. A few we spoke to referred to HB as another one of Gods waiting rooms. After that debacle our hopes are back in Cyprus. (only if I can pull myself away from the granchildren).

Next week we are scouring the Cambridge area. Their are some new developments which seem interesting. Havent yet ruled out Kent though.

I would suggest my area , but that possible recommendation ended last Wednesday when a vigilante of neighbours wanted to lynch me for submitting a modest planning application.
