I am going to be moving to Cyprus in June and I am a bit nervous as I won't know hardly anybody out there! Is there a group of english people that meet up to socialise? I will be living in Limassol but I can drive so I would be ok to travel a bit. Thanks.

By this post you have missed your chance of meeting the locals. If you wanted to mix with the brits, you should have gone to Bognor Regis or Southend.

I used to live near Southend, oh, the pier, the pong of fish 'n chips, the amusement arcades, the crime ....................happy days!!!!

I hope you have not taken any offence. I think its silly to join a Cyprus Forum and state that you want to meet expats. They should get around a bit otherwise they will turn Cyprus in to a Benidorm.

What happy memories .... when first we were plucked from sunny Cyprus and arrived in black and white Britain of the 60's and 70's ... our Bank Holiday treat of seeing some greenery was to drive to Southend in my dad's Zephyr 4 or Zodiac something, stop and pick dandelion leaves along the way ( for my mum's favourite dish upon returning home in the evening) ... and then once at Southend, the ultimate treat of a paper plate with rock-candy shaped "English Breakfast" covered in cling-film ... and then perhaps a plastic dome with "scenes of Buckingham palace and guards" ... in a snowstorm ...

We stopped once near farmland when we came across a hedge full of 'Gavullia'. The spiky greenery which when the 'hairy' outer layer was 'skinned' off/peeled we would eat the sweet fleshy parts. The English asked what we were doing, they called us animals. The GCs also have a lot to answer for.

Those were the days in the early '60s. We used to get taken over to Southend, Brighton, Eastbourne, Hastings etc or if we were really lucky to Margate with its sandy beach. Witnessed some of the mods and rockers battles on the seafronts on the bank holidays. Gathered armfuls of molloshes ( mallow ), loads of cobnuts in the late summer and snails if it had rained. Picnics of water-melon and Cy bread, halloumi, boiled eggs, fried chicken and koftes. Halcyon days.

...try a French Club, great place to meet with people who are expanding their minds, locals and etc., while you learn languages, probably more than just French. Just get settled and start walking. Speaking of Brits, that famous one, Durrell (sorry i forgot the sprlling) walked the whole island, it is lovely, take it slow, you will meet many friendly people from all over along the way.

Southend doesn't compare to the delights of my home town of Herne Bay. It had the second longest pier in UK until a storm damaged it. There was a paddle steamer that sailed every day from Southend to Herne Bay called the "Medway Queen". I don't feel comfortable saying this but I've been on the Medway Queen loads of time, even went up the estuary on her. Back in the 60s, despite the pebbles, you could not find a place to park your deckchair in the height of the summer. Now its all gone, no pier, no pavillion, no Cypriot restaurants, no hotels, no holidaymakers, no pedalos, no boat trips but worst of all no Medway Queen. I asked a friend once "what destroyed Herne Bay?" after a while he replied "the jet engine", think about it, it's true.

Well Deniz if I'd known that you could have called in for tea. (actually I now live 20 minutes from HB) Herne Bay is full of people who moved there for their retirement, sometimes called Hernia Bay. Whitstable has a bit more charm and not quite as depressed but its generally more expensive 'cos wealthy Londoners are buying second homes in the town. Margate is full of GCs but the town is quite depressed, Broadstairs is a better choice. If you want any advice on the area contact me, there are some really nice rural locations and a few to avoid.

You are right about the much older folk. A few we spoke to referred to HB as another one of Gods waiting rooms. After that debacle our hopes are back in Cyprus. (only if I can pull myself away from the granchildren).
