Varosha

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Varosha

Will there be any movement on this issue before there is an overall solution?A goodwill gesture would be to allow at least the Greek-Cypriot municipal authorities,if not the former inhabitants to enter the place under escort and make an initial inspection of their properties etc.It would not change the status of the place as far as the Turkish side is concerned but would at least improve the atmosphere. Most people are well aware that the place is in ruins and it would take years to renovate it,even if they were allowed free access tomorrow.I don't think Talat would have any objection but the problem is with the Turkish Army hierarchy who control the area and refuse to allow anyone in, except under exceptional circumstances?

I don't think there will be any movement. They Turks will use varosha during the negotiations as a trump card.

It is a trump card that can be used both ways.

Way one- they behave like Cypriots and give back the town, the reconstruction includes TC workers, architects and engineers.

Way two- they hold on to it till the last possible moment behaving like bazaar merchants, and the reconstruction takes place withouth them.

The reconstruction of Varosi is the biggest civil engineering project in the history of Cyprus, one of the biggest in the world. It will be paid for by the Varosiotes, thus making them victims twice over. If the TC side is not willing to show understanding over the issue then they do not deserve to participate in the project.

As for the opening of ports point, it is a non starter. Famagusta port is not large enough to handle container traffic. The whole port thing is another ploy in this recognition game. And this will be proven once the issue is settled and TC exports will be handled via Limasson anyway, because Limassol is the only container able port of Cyprus.

As in you will never be recognized as the TRNC join us and you will, isn't that an incentive or a card to entice the other side?

this is a card you play all the time when you push non recognition in our faces, the bottom line is both sides will play tit for tat in the hope of getting solution that will best benefit their own community.

"that will best benefit their own community."

Precisely, so if anyone wants to benefit from the reconstruction of Famagusta should contribute towards it. No contribution, no benefit. Simple formula.

Maras is part and parcel of the bigger deal in order to resolve it as in the AP you have to have a comprehensive solution as if it is given back without making any progress on the overall solution whats the use of giving it to FCs, do we just hope for the best? cant see that happening can you?
