Dead right there dude! Cyp wages can be only enough to exist on but hey, what a quality of life we have!

The crunch of the matter is that Cyprus needs the tourist Industry flourishing not diminishing.
On the subject of prices I agree that in comparison to restaurant and hotel costs in the UK Cyprus is considerably cheaper. On my last visit to Cyprus I most definitely noticed the increased costs of shopping but on having a Sunday buffet lunch at the Amathus was rather pleased that a very sumptuous 3- course meal with a couple of bottles of local wine came to under £100 stg for two people. Taking into account the fantastic ambiance of the place , the sea view etc then it was a bargain.

£100 sterling?

ok, £10 bottle of wine x 2 = £20 that works out at £40 a head. How often can you do this?

Not really a bargain mate, is it?

Do read the post Simon...

I have, and?

And if you had read the post properly you would have seen that he had a sumptuous meal in a fantastic location with great ambiance for £100 sterling which he considered value for money. You simply couldn’t get an equivalent in the UK.

If he’s been charged £100 Sterling for a Full English in Pafos Market with a small Keo thrown in he might well have thought it expensive.

In Pissouri, we can pop to the local supermarket and spend the equivelant to £25-£30 in the shop and come out thinking wow, what have we got here then? This is supposed to be a village so I am guessing in Paphos, Limassol, Napa etc the prices are even higher....

Why on earth would a village shop with limited trade be cheaper than a shop in a main town? In the UK is your local ‘Paki’ shop cheaper than Tesco? Of course not!

The village shops provide excellent service, are open almost 24/7 and the owners have become great friends since we have been in Pissouri. However, it is obvious to anybody with a semblance of a brain that a large supermarket will provide better pricing. While we buy essentials in the village, we’ll do our main shop in a larger supermarket as I suspect you do in the UK.

simonwjones wrote:Two years ago I remember going out for a meal with my partner in Paphos. 2 x starters, 2 x main course and bottle of wine costing £60UK equivelent...rip off.

Nothing will happen. If people are prepared to pay these stupid prices then they will continue to rise...

As has already been pointed out, if you eat at a tourist restaurant you can expect to pay premium prices. There are still plenty of places in Cyprus where you can get a great meal for €15. Have you eaten an Athos’ Midway restaurant in Pissouri?

Quite frankly, if you loathe the place so much I can’t see why you have purchased an apartment here.

WHo said I loathe the place? I am free to my opinion - jsut like everyone else who I have spoken to that lives in the village and they have the same opinion.

Paying £100 for a meal for two is not cheap unless you eat out in London everytime, come on even a man with your number of brain cells can see that! If you eat in London, Paris, New York and major cities in the world then that will probably be reasonably yes but not if you dont though. :)

You are also very much contradicting yourself aswell. You agree that everyone that eats in the tourist area you will pay over the odds, well isn't a hotel classed at tourist?

With reference to the local shop in Pissouri if I shop in the local village shop here in the UK I pay alot less then I would if I were to shop in the town. Prices are cheaper but choice is not quite the same. So, why is this different in Cyprus

No I have not been to Athos I don;t. Where abouts is it?

Also you said you can not find a place as good as value with nice views etc for £100 for 2 in the UK - thats is complete and utter trash my friend.

I defer to your greater experience Simon – I’m sure that prices in the UK’s top hotels and restaurants have plummeted since I left there five and a half years ago. I stand corrected.

Also, please pass on my congratulations to the owner of your local store – he has managed to use his vast purchasing power to enable him to sell for less than the superstores. Excellent!

Next time I see news reports of Tesco using their purchasing muscle to close smaller shops by selling below their cost I shall shout at the TV in the most aggressive manner.

Yes, as I said I defer to your superior knowledge…

I can barely afford my €250 per year council tax and I went to a restaurant the other week for Sunday lunch. Four courses plus coffee cost me an outrageous €12! :x

I remember the days..when you could go to the pictures, followed by a fish and chip supper, bottle of dandelion and burdock, get the best seats on the bus back home and still have change from sixpence ...or so the story goes.
My council tax is nearly £2000 a year and if I want to go 12 miles on a bus I have to pay £8.00 one way.
I know where I would rather be full time..

Now your being silly Grump!

Ok, how much was a litre of petrol when you moved out? How much is it now?

Lets see if we can get the prices on petrol in UK now and back in 2003 and see who has the bigger increase?

What would that prove?

Who is being silly now? :P

Tell me how much you pay in Council Tax (me = €250).

Tell me how much it will cost to heat your home and provide hot water between now and the end of November (me = £0).

Tell me where you can get a four course meal in the UK for €12*

Tell me how much it costs you for a litre of petrol or diesel (me = ~€1).

Tell me what you pay in income tax (me = 10%)

Then tell me how expensive Cyprus is.

BTW it is ‘you’re’ not ‘your’.

*NB a Big Mac, Fries, Coke & McFlurrey doesn’t count.

Ooooh, please can I include a Maccy'dees! :P

Anyway this is about tourism in Cyprus going down due to prices and not about fueling your house or the water in your tap. Petrol does effect the tourist

Oh four course meal for 12 Euro I can get one of those for about £10 at a local pub 5 miles from me. In fact I can get two meals, main course, 2 drinks for £8.00 Ok!
