Cyprus tourism on downward spiral.

Feel free to talk about anything that you want.

Thanks for the welcome guys - I feel better now. I agree that if some people persist in moaning about any country or anything for that matter - the choice is theirs to put it right if possible or jog on! However, personally I would'nt urge anyone to leave Cyprus - that would be a bad choice.

because i work in the hotel industry, i have to say that i do feel that we are on a downward spiral. One major influence being the lack of customer service.. nobody really cares about the guests anymore... managers are so busy on porn sites, or sleeping with all the foreign girls..

It's really a bad environment to work in. they don't pay alot, they treat their staff like dogs, so staff work grumpy, sad and moody. there's hardly any good training given either..

oh well it's life, and we live it better than the othe option

Thats so true sniper and its not even a cyprus thing i mean im from uk and yes the pays better there but you still get treated like crap i fear its the same in most places , it really really stinks though we are human beings and deserve a hell of a lot better than this bull.

Marty - at least you have a job! I'd rather have a crap job in Cyprus than the UK equivalent. At least you have the sunshine there and a better lifestyle, and, less refugees draining the system which us tax payers fork out for. Look on the bright side!

Do you mean those weird looking medieval spiting creaturers with dirty looking hair wearing odd clothing and modern looking running shoes that the government tells us they enhance our way of life ?

And there's a hell of a lot of them in Cyprus too mostly from what I can see in the Larnaca area but no doubt coming to a town near you soon.

There's no escape

I was hoping that strict measures would be put in place by the Govt regarding this subject. If there is a bright side, they don't receive benefits and have to work for a living, so the GC workers are not subsidising these 'people' :?:

Saw several in Larnaca last year but assumed they were students or tourists.

Up goes the crime rate then!

:? It's a free economy based on offer and demand. If you dont like and think there are better places just leave. Why are you still here? :?

I can see why you reside on Mars !!!
I live in the UK , I'm also very critical of many aspects and would be offended if anyone suggested that I should go else where if I was not happy here.
The crunch of the matter is that Cyprus needs the tourist Industry flourishing not diminishing.
On the subject of prices I agree that in comparison to restaurant and hotel costs in the UK Cyprus is considerably cheaper. On my last visit to Cyprus I most definitely noticed the increased costs of shopping but on having a Sunday buffet lunch at the Amathus was rather pleased that a very sumptuous 3- course meal with a couple of bottles of local wine came to under £100 stg for two people. Taking into account the fantastic ambiance of the place , the sea view etc then it was a bargain.

£100 sterling?

ok, £10 bottle of wine x 2 = £20 that works out at £40 a head. How often can you do this?

Not really a bargain mate, is it?

Do read the post Simon...

I have, and?

And if you had read the post properly you would have seen that he had a sumptuous meal in a fantastic location with great ambiance for £100 sterling which he considered value for money. You simply couldn’t get an equivalent in the UK.

If he’s been charged £100 Sterling for a Full English in Pafos Market with a small Keo thrown in he might well have thought it expensive.

simonwjones wrote:The prices in Cyprus are bloody high and its cheaper to stay at home than go there. In Pissouri, we can pop to the local supermarket and spend the equivelant to £25-£30 in the shop and come out thinking wow, what have we got here then? This is supposed to be a village so I am guessing in Paphos, Limassol, Napa etc the prices are even higher....

Why on earth would a village shop with limited trade be cheaper than a shop in a main town? In the UK is your local ‘Paki’ shop cheaper than Tesco? Of course not!

The village shops provide excellent service, are open almost 24/7 and the owners have become great friends since we have been in Pissouri. However, it is obvious to anybody with a semblance of a brain that a large supermarket will provide better pricing. While we buy essentials in the village, we’ll do our main shop in a larger supermarket as I suspect you do in the UK.

simonwjones wrote:Two years ago I remember going out for a meal with my partner in Paphos. 2 x starters, 2 x main course and bottle of wine costing £60UK equivelent...rip off.

Nothing will happen. If people are prepared to pay these stupid prices then they will continue to rise...

As has already been pointed out, if you eat at a tourist restaurant you can expect to pay premium prices. There are still plenty of places in Cyprus where you can get a great meal for €15. Have you eaten an Athos’ Midway restaurant in Pissouri?

Quite frankly, if you loathe the place so much I can’t see why you have purchased an apartment here.

Following on from village shops. Our village shop is a village based co-operative. All products are bought at trade price and sold on for a small profit.A village meeting is held once a year and prices are fixed accordingly.Ie: chocolate is cheaper in the village than in the UK, the same applies to all provisions sold.
Hence all the locals shop in the village, shop hours are 6-10 7 days a week, and a few odd hours in the evenings. Our coffee shop runs on the same basis, soft drinks are still the equiv of 40p and a keo is £1.00, coffee works out at 20p.
All in all they both offer fantastic friendly service at a price locals can afford, and both are manned by the odd worker but rule of thumb you help yourself, pay and help tidy up. Great system...
