The cost of daily essentials , bread , milk , cheese , water are much higher than the UK , the largest provider of Tourists. The airport prices for beverages , snacks etc is perhaps the highest in Europe ! As for taxis , well , prices in Paris are cheaper than Cyprus. Take note Cypriots , your livelihood is at risk . Listen not to the GRs of this world , Cyprus not only needs the tourist revenue but it needs to increase it and maintain the present levels.
The income generated by Banks , like in every European country , remains at the banks coffers , the populace at large receives little or no benefit .
Financial executives , lawyers , Accountants etc , all are prone to any serious loss of tourist revenue. Thousands of Cypriots rely on the biggest foreign currency earner for their livelihood. The tourist industry.

The comment is 100% true. If there was NO tourists in Cyprus the country would grind to a halt. Think about the tourism trade, tourists bring jobs to the airports, catering, hotels, bars, restaurants, car hire, taxis and many more. If tourism keeps on dropping and less and less people visiting the island this will have a knock on effect with Real Estate and Property Sales, and this has a massive knock-on effect.

The prices in Cyprus are bloody high and its cheaper to stay at home than go there. In Pissouri, we can pop to the local supermarket and spend the equivelant to £25-£30 in the shop and come out thinking wow, what have we got here then? This is supposed to be a village so I am guessing in Paphos, Limassol, Napa etc the prices are even higher....

Two years ago I remember going out for a meal with my partner in Paphos. 2 x starters, 2 x main course and bottle of wine costing £60UK equivelent...rip off.

Nothing will happen. If people are prepared to pay these stupid prices then they will continue to rise...

Agriculture contributed 3.1% , Industry 19.1% and Services 77.9% to the total revenue received by the Cyprus government .Tourism alone contributed £1.5 billion out of a total of £ 3.1 billion pounds !! Therefore from the total services of 77.9% almost 60% was from tourism.Who says we do not need tourism ?

Bit of a sweeping statement there Simon. Salaries in some sectors are on the up. OK there are those that still find themseves struggling while seeing their companies hitting the big time, but that is not only reserved for Cyprus.
Eating out, food shopping is still relatively cheap, just keep away from tourist areas. Tourist areas the world over are renowned for their higher than average prices.
While on holiday tourists genrally spend no matter what the cost, getting the tourist to come is the name of the game.

Sorry pal, dont agree with you  Even if the wages were increasing the price of fuel and general living is increasing higher than the wages ever could so living there is now more expensive

I can see why you reside on Mars !!!
I live in the UK , I'm also very critical of many aspects and would be offended if anyone suggested that I should go else where if I was not happy here.
The crunch of the matter is that Cyprus needs the tourist Industry flourishing not diminishing.
On the subject of prices I agree that in comparison to restaurant and hotel costs in the UK Cyprus is considerably cheaper. On my last visit to Cyprus I most definitely noticed the increased costs of shopping but on having a Sunday buffet lunch at the Amathus was rather pleased that a very sumptuous 3- course meal with a couple of bottles of local wine came to under £100 stg for two people. Taking into account the fantastic ambiance of the place , the sea view etc then it was a bargain.

£100 sterling?

ok, £10 bottle of wine x 2 = £20 that works out at £40 a head. How often can you do this?

Not really a bargain mate, is it?

In comparison to a hotel in the UK it is a bargain. I paid £30 for a cooked breakfast in a London hotel last month.

sorry.
