The cost of daily essentials , bread , milk , cheese , water are much higher than the UK , the largest provider of Tourists. The airport prices for beverages , snacks etc is perhaps the highest in Europe ! As for taxis , well , prices in Paris are cheaper than Cyprus. Take note Cypriots , your livelihood is at risk . Listen not to the GRs of this world , Cyprus not only needs the tourist revenue but it needs to increase it and maintain the present levels.
The income generated by Banks , like in every European country , remains at the banks coffers , the populace at large receives little or no benefit .
Financial executives , lawyers , Accountants etc , all are prone to any serious loss of tourist revenue. Thousands of Cypriots rely on the biggest foreign currency earner for their livelihood. The tourist industry.

Cyprus needs exactly the opposite. It needs more advancements in technology, e.g. renewable energy that will stop the dependance on foreign oil. The tourism industry should be developed only in terms of quality (something that is indeed in progress). I other words, we need a limited number of rich tourists which will provide a high revenue to the CY economy. If someone wants a low budget vacation then there are many option (northern african countries, Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, etc.). Total dependance on tourism means total dependance on other nations. It's time to move on! :)

I thought:

1 Tourism was now down to about 15% of GDP.

2 There was an increase in the number of tourists arrivals so far this year.

3 Unemployment was low in Cyprus to the extent that there is a large imported workforce.

In light of the above, where's the panic?

I suppose the panic is with the people who work in the industry. It is no real suprise that the CTO massage the figures concerning tourism, and have done for a couple of years. Beds in hotels taken are not in the CTO's figures but arrivals by plane are.
Are all who arrive by plane to Cyprus tourists ? maybe once, not any more.
If you want to get the true picture speak to the people in the industry, they will tell you tourism is down..

The comment is 100% true. If there was NO tourists in Cyprus the country would grind to a halt. Think about the tourism trade, tourists bring jobs to the airports, catering, hotels, bars, restaurants, car hire, taxis and many more. If tourism keeps on dropping and less and less people visiting the island this will have a knock on effect with Real Estate and Property Sales, and this has a massive knock-on effect.

The prices in Cyprus are bloody high and its cheaper to stay at home than go there. In Pissouri, we can pop to the local supermarket and spend the equivelant to £25-£30 in the shop and come out thinking wow, what have we got here then? This is supposed to be a village so I am guessing in Paphos, Limassol, Napa etc the prices are even higher....

Two years ago I remember going out for a meal with my partner in Paphos. 2 x starters, 2 x main course and bottle of wine costing £60UK equivelent...rip off.

Nothing will happen. If people are prepared to pay these stupid prices then they will continue to rise...

Agriculture contributed 3.1% , Industry 19.1% and Services 77.9% to the total revenue received by the Cyprus government .Tourism alone contributed £1.5 billion out of a total of £ 3.1 billion pounds !! Therefore from the total services of 77.9% almost 60% was from tourism.Who says we do not need tourism ?
