 Too many years in the land of doom makes brain grow mushrooms...

Ok, so theres enough vacancies in the financial sector to employ most of the out of work waiters, cooks and cleaners then? My apologies...........

There is a shift in the eonomy of Cyprus at this time. More and more graduates are returning with financial services, law and accounting degrees to cope with this. I wouldn't worry about the Cypriot economy Tess, its a robust Eurozone economy.

Now about those pension funds in the north that Soyer spent on salaries.....

That was a very bad thing to do, and anywhere else there would have been heads rolling by now!!!

With regards the thriving economy in the South, where will all the unskilled tourism sector employees find employment? Can the economy support them if hotels lay off staff or have to close?

Most hotel and tourism sector workers come from abroad Tess, presumably they would have to go home.

I totally agree, if someone thinks we're miserable here they should go somewhere else.

The Cyprus economy will collapse in the absence of tourism. Unemployment will rise to unprecedented levels and all Cypriot companies will suffer as a result. Cyprus is not only becoming expensive IT IS bloody expensive .
The cost of daily essentials , bread , milk , cheese , water are much higher than the UK , the largest provider of Tourists. The airport prices for beverages , snacks etc is perhaps the highest in Europe ! As for taxis , well , prices in Paris are cheaper than Cyprus. Take note Cypriots , your livelihood is at risk . Listen not to the GRs of this world , Cyprus not only needs the tourist revenue but it needs to increase it and maintain the present levels.
The income generated by Banks , like in every European country , remains at the banks coffers , the populace at large receives little or no benefit .
Financial executives , lawyers , Accountants etc , all are prone to any serious loss of tourist revenue. Thousands of Cypriots rely on the biggest foreign currency earner for their livelihood. The tourist industry.
