If some of the EOKA fighters also had other long term aims that was their prerogative.

They did us a great favour in risking their lives to gain some Freedom for Cyprus from Colonial Rule.

Don't judge the past by today's standards, things usually have layers of complexity.

The end result was (semi) Independence and that was a great achievement. Onwards!

But of course you would agree with GR. You are his lapdog.

Lame attempt at starting a fight ....

Don't forget; I know you have a softer side now, so you can't rile me up so easily!

Damn

The indisputable immediate aim of EOKA was the removal of the British colonialists from Cyprus. Now, if some or all of these EOKA members also had an additional underlying nostalgia to unite Cyprus with Greece at a later date, is something we’ll never know as nobody ever got that far, but everyone DID witness EOKA members fighting off the British.

What a load of rubbish. Of course you had to fight and remove the Brits first before you could get to plan B. And we all know what that was. Exterminate the TCs and then ENOSIS with Greece. Any GC who deny this must be certifiable.

Had you lived through the years 1955-1959 you would never have dismissed the fact that the struggle of which I was a small part had as its aim the Union of Cyrus with Greece.
ENOSIS WAS THE PREDOMINANT AIM .

Let me also correct your misgivings on the subject. The EOKA struggle was to rid Cyprus of the British and to achieve the nation's ambition of ENOSIS. The T/C " EXTERMINATION " NONSENSE NEVER CAME INTO EQUATION , frankly my dear the T/Cs were seen as unimportant , were considered subservient and were seen purely as remnants of a previous occupation. To put mildly they did not matter but having sited with the enemy , the British , they were seen as the enemy too. Neither extraordinary here , perfectly normal to perceive those joining forces with the enemy as such. I have stated many times that the ultimate goal and the driving force of the struggle ie ENOSIS was wrong , with hindsight of course . The dismissal of the T/Cs as a mere minority not worthy of consideration was also wrong.

Thank God there are decent GCs who are man enough to admit the truth. GR, unless we all take responsibility of our actions there can never be peace on the island.

If you think the rest of the world is oblivious to the facts of the Cyprus conflict then you are a fool. Why do you think you do not get the support or sympathy that if everything you claim to be true you would have naturally got? Please stop treating us and the rest of the world as idiots, in doing so you are looking the idiot instead.

Nobody can claim to have known the exact feelings of everyone else. My family and immediate relatives had no part, or any interest in ENOSIS whatsoever. It’s a shame a lot of trouble makers had made so much noise and seemingly condemned the entire population in the history books to assist Turkish propaganda today.

The Greek newspaper Eleftherotipia published an interview with Nicos Sampson on Feb. 26,1981 in which he said, “Had Turkey not intervened I would not only have proclaimed enosis, I would have annihilated the Turks in Cyprus.”

Paphitis wrote:Mihalis, Cypriots have always had a siege mentality which stems from being invaded, conquered and oppressed for the majority of their history. It is this siege mentality that made them beleive that they needed to aim for ENOSIS to overthrow the British quicker with the aid of Greece. Most Cypriots could never beleive that they could fight the British, a superpower in the 50s, with any degree of success. When the Zurich agreement was announced, EOKA stopped the armed struggle. So Independance was an acceptable scenario to EOKA, however there was some resistance to the Zurich agreement as many beleived that it was designed for the demise of the Cypriot people and to serve external interests such as SBA's for the UK.

Still Independence path seem more rational and lawful that the struggle of ENOSIS.

I said that the option of Independence had never given by EOKA fighters to the people. It was ENOSIS or DEATH this was their slogan. The other option was British rule .

Enosis had fueled the spirit of the division with all known concequences (1974)

Enosis was unlawful and thats the reason the Zurich agreemenst have been devised by the UN.

I don't give a TOSS, and neither does any court of law in the world, about who SAID what but it's who DID what that matters!

Again, recommended further reading for you...

You've skipped a few decades United!

We were discussing the pre-independence EOKA organisation which was set up to rid colonial power from Cyprus ... not the later group EOKA B.

BTW Miltiades is in a minority of one here for saying that EOKA's function was primarily for ENOSIS ... all my family like GR's have been fervent anti-ENOSIS including my mother who happens to be Greek.
