‘We can’t discuss Cyprus over coffee’

THE GOVERNMENT yesterday ruled out any meeting between President Tassos Papadopoulos and newly-elected Turkish Cypriot leader Mehmet Ali Talat outside UN auspices.

Spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides told a gathering in Paphos that the ground for such a meeting must be adequately prepared.

“I would not rule out the possibility of a social meeting between Papadopoulos and Talat but the Cyprus problem is far too serious to be discussed at such meetings, be they for coffee or otherwise. The question of Cyprus is an issue that should be resolved under the UN auspices,” the spokesman said.

His comments come two days after Talat was elected ‘president’ of the Turkish Cypriot breakaway state in the north replacing veteran leader Rauf Denktash, 81 who has retired.

It is widely expected that some form of talks process will now get under way, but the UN is waiting for the Greek Cypriot side to clarify its positions.

“The whole effort is to resume the talks as soon as possible with a view at reaching a solution and with the necessary preparation prior to the talks,” Chrysostomides said.

Why the hell not? Some of the great decisions in history have been made over a cup of tea or coffee. Yes, the Cyprus problem is a serious issue, but no-one's saying a solution will be drawn up on the back of an envelope by a cozy fire (a la Churchill and Stalin's division of Europe). A series of breakfast meetings with the two leaders and key advisers may not solve the problem, but it will at least get some dialogue going, of which there is currently none. If TPap wants a UN chaperone, he should clarify his positions and then demand talks. Since he claims that much of his time is devoted to finding a solution to the Cyprus problem, you would have expected he'd be able to come up with a few bullet points by now...

Interesting point in relation to mentions of tea and coffee. The art of tea-leaf reading is referred to as Tasseomancy... maybe TPap should get his cup and saucer out and let us in on what he sees as the way ahead.

Very true Bro. He'll be paying a visit to Rauf next for coffee overlooking Kyrenia.

He had 5 secret meetings with Denktas junior prior to the referendum. In those meetings he disclosed the secret (that he will urge the GC community to vote no) to Serdar and Denktas senior was able to lift the gloom and cry loudly "I thank god the GC's voted No".

The man is senile or mentally retarted, but one thing is for sure he is not for solution but a velvet partition, remember this is an EOKA man who is a known sickened turk hater.

Partition has many admirers but fortunately there are forces in both communities that are willing to resist this daemon. I want to believe that Talat will not go down the road to partition. I realise that his future stance will depend a great deal on us (the GC side) so I keep my fingers crossed that Talat can become a great Cypriot leader that will care for the interests of Cyprus as a whole. Maybe a velvet revolution on our side, just like the one in the TC community in 2003 can turn the balance. To be honest, I cannot at the moment see light at the end of the tunnel, but the spectre of partition may just spur the GC's out of the deep sleep.

Bananiot,
In the past, another small and equally pathetic minority attempted to create a negative climate against Makarios, the elected president of the country and even took arms to achieve its goal. The end result was the coup and the Turkish invasion. If you think that the GCs will again repeat the mistake of the past and allow a small, extremist minority like yours, to undermine the democratic principles of the country and the elected leadership, you are MISTAKEN. I do not underestimate the coincidence that as in those days, the fund providers are also the same people (CIA.) However, if you think that we will stay still to your undemocratic practises and let you repeat the same crime like in the past and go against the majority, like EOKA B did, you will be SURPRISED. WE DO NOT FORGET!

P.S.: It also not a coincidence that your party had sheltered those EOKA B gangsters and your party leader was the lawyer of most of them especially in Limassol area.
