Any clues as to what they would deem as extremely serious. Is just the usual things like terminal illness, strokes etc. Would it include heart conditions?

Well, remember that they will exclude pre-existing conditions such as angina, asthma and mild diabetes…

My fathers angina was not deemed serious to preclude him from private health insurance. I think the answer is shop around, and find a insurance that fit's the bill.
You will be asked to take a pre insurance medical if starting at a certain age.
