FORCED MARRIAGES IN TURKEY :
"""Forced marriage, in contrast to arranged marriage, has been described as 'any marriage conducted without the valid consent of both parties and [which] may involve coercion, mental abuse, emotional blackmail, and intense family or social pressure. In the most extreme cases, it may also involve physical violence, abuse, abduction, detention, and murder of the individual concerned' (2 June 2004).

Based on research in the eastern and southeastern regions of Turkey, WWHR reported that 50.8 per cent of women "were married without their consent although the consent of both the woman and the man is a precondition for marriage according to Turkish Law" (Apr. 2002). Corroborating information on the prevalence of forced marriage in Turkey could not be found among the sources consulted by the Research Directorate.

Amnesty International characterizes forced marriage as a form of violence against women by family members, that takes various expressions within Turkish Society: "early marriage, berdel (the barter of women to avoid paying dowries and other marriage expenses) and besik kertmesi (a form of arranged marriage in which families barter newborn daughters, forcing them to marry as soon as they are considered old enough)" (2 June 2004).

Young girls living in rural areas, specifically in eastern Anatolia, face difficulties, in trying to oppose forced marriage since under tribal custom they are considered the property of either their father before marriage or by their husband afterwards and if they resist social pressure from the community, "they do so at their peril" (MEI 11 Jan.2002). Similarly, according to one of the leaders of WWHR, rural women are likely to be marginalized in the context of changes induced by the new Civil Code, including the raising of the legal age for marriage to 18, as they "must contend with traditions and customs, [including underage marriage] that have little to do with the legislative revisions their urban sisters enjoy" (Women's Enews 13 Jan. 2002). ""

Oh NO!!!! We are doomed..One side we have the TUrks and the other murdering GCs that were in the EOKA movement that even killed their own by the thousand and blamed it on Turkey......Slimey bastards....

b) Or was the reason they trained, financed and supplied arms to the PKK terrorists so that they (Greeks and GCs of course) can scream "human rights" propaganda to keep Turkey out of the EU?

Thanks for a and b, you did us TCs and Turkey a great favour, unintentionally of course.

Miltiades, my good friend, you have to understand what Zan and all the other NeoPartitionist are going through ever since the 2004 Annan Plan, the disguised Partition "Virgin Birth" Confederacy concept failed to give them everything they had dreamed off, legally, than what they have now, which is illegal, and at the same time, see the destruction of the RoC. They have been agonizing for the past 4 years over their attempt that failed miserably. If they truly want true peace and a fair settlement, which every Cypriot deserves, GC's and TC's, then they would accept True Democracy and True Federation, which is the middle point between a Unitary state what the GC's wanted, and a Confederacy state, which is what the TC's wanted. That is a compromise that we should all be able to live with, with all the individual citizens constitutional rights protected in the new Constitution in the new Cyprus Federation.

Anything else is just pure crap and should be ignored until the cows come home.

It was you and those "Cypriots" who shared your "views" of ENOSIS in 1963 that caused the CypProp in the first place and you want us to share your views now?

You must be drunk again to even think we TCs would believe a word that is coming out of your mouth and become 2nd class citizens in your (GCs) country so that you can finish off the genocide attempt you started in 1963
on us TCs to fulfil your dream for ENOSIS.

When you talk about us TCs it's always "they"..."they" this and "they" that.

When you talk about the TRNC, you always put in inverted comas.

Anything you say about the so-called "RoC" you use the word "legal" but anything about uc TC or the TRNC it's always "illegal" this and "illegal" that.

You use the word "puppet" when you talk about the TRNC and/or it's Government/President.

And you get upset when I call you a CONVERT or other TCs don't believe you are a TC but are a GC?
