Hi Boomers. Contrary to your assumptions I do not hide. There is life outside the forum too. Today is saturday. If there is a choice of emptying my bank balance with my wife and having a slanging match with you, I know which one I'd prefer. I just happen to come back from shopping. and feel free to see this in whatever colorful manner you choose.

I am off again. Have a good day. You can see for yourself how things can turn. You have ranted against me to no end and I have not retorted in the same manner. If you ever feel slighted, no need for retaliation. Keep your cool. Keep off the 4xXXXX.

Have a good day and watch your BP

Hi Denizella,

Do I take it then that blue ain't your colour?...

An interesting thought just wondered through my mind though...do you both, you and the misses, wear the same blouse when you go shopping? ...with the exemption of cource yours has extra support of the spine

oh and please do have a lovely day and do take care of that wonderfull spine of yours...

You proved yourself again Boomers. Now I realised I should not have mentioned my wife. So I have said nothing wrong in my posts.

Blue is my colour Boomers. My names means 'Thalassa'. The blue sea. Quite apt isnt it.

Ok i've got some time to kill so here goes.

Who is a Turk?

Once upon a time, many moons ago, at school, during libray studies, in an encylopeadia, i chanced upon an entry entitled "The Five Tribes of Europe".

It has since occurred to me that if Europe had or has tribes what about the other continents, well....Asia for example has Chin, Indie, Arab, Jew, Rus,Turkic etc...
Americas and Australiaia are made of indeginous and settlers.

Well The five european tribes of Europe according to this article were roughly:

Celt............ Scots, Irish, Welsh, some French.
Romance.....French, Italian, Spanish
Germanic.... German, Dutch, Danes,
Greek......... Greek

This seemed all straight forward and easy to comprehend, the fifth tribe however was not so simple. The Fifth Tribe whose name i dont remember was a mixture of three ethnicities Maltese, Finnish and Turkish. This tribe came from Asia, those that settled in modern day Turkey bacame Turks. Others kept moving and settled in Malta and others settled in Finland.

Now i dont know wether or not this is true, its something which i read.I found it hard to believe turks and finns were connected. Turks and Maltese maybe but turks and finns never. However i have met on two different occasions Finnish people who told me they were taught in school of their ancestry and they were aware of their Turkish and Maltese connections. So i guess there is some credence to the article.

So who is a turk? well someone decended from that tribe i guess and settled in modern day turkey, or those who settled since either in Turkey or the Ottoman Empire and chose to become Turk and their descendants.

the above may be true, it may not, i dont know. Its what ive read.

On the other hand there is alway The Turkic group itself, which you can research yourself if you so wish.

hope this goes someway to answering the question.

On the other hand you claim you are a Cypriot, which pretty much equals to whoever has passed by here throughout history and dominated you poor souls.

So which one is it GR, who are you people?

Don't tell me you are STILL Greek, that was 3000 years ago

Considering the fact that today's Turks do not look Mongolian but... well... Greek, I'd say it's the other way around. Also, since the Turks were nomads before conquering Anatolia, it was the Greeks that taught you everything about irrigation, arts, architecture and city building, science etc. So it's not just your blood, it's also your culture that's Greek

The Turkish language group does indeed belong to the Finno-ugrian Group of languages which Turkic is a main member.

Doubtless, the Turks, the Nomad Turks did absorb knowledge and new ideas from the cultures it absorbed into its empires. But to think that they arrived on horseback at Manzikert/Malazgirt in 1071, with just bows and arrows in their Quivers is totally absurd. All you need to do is look up the great cities along the famous Silk road from Aksu in Eastern Turkistan , to Samarkand and the Saljuk/Selcuk monuments all the way to Iconium/Konya in Anatolia . You all know about these. Yes they did absorb Byzantine ideas. They did appreciate the new art forms they came across. You can see this whenever you look at mosques all over the territories of the Ottoman Empire. They did not hate the Greek Culture they put the Byzantine dome on every mosque.

"the Nomad Turks did absorb knowledge and new ideas from the cultures it absorbed into its empires"

which puts an end to the baclava debate once and for all, and also the moussaka, loukoumi, halloumi etc debates. These were all Byzantine goodies which were graciously handed on to the new arrivals. The Arabs of course had no influence at all on either of these cultures. They were always jealous of us both.
