Technically there are no Turkish Cypriots in Cyprus

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Lets put this way: If we are not Greeks, then there are no Greeks, there are no Turks, there are no French, there are no Russians etc, when it comes to ethnicity.

Now if you are talking about citizenship, then yes in that case we are just Cypriots, not Greeks or Turks.

I'm just quoting your reply because otherwise the entry gets far too long.

I think that you would find a lot of people, TCs especially, who would say that your statement (shared by a number of GCs) that the 1960 Constitution didn't really amount to anything was a principle factor leading to the Cyprob today.

The reality is that very few GCs, if any, could trace their way back to a Greek ancestor who landed in Cyprus anytime BC. I'm not sure what an indigenous Cypriot is in ethnic terms, but given the successive waves of invaders and settlers before the era of ID cards and censuses, common sense would say that it is probably pretty mixed.[/quote]

In your first paragraph...you are right the Curpys problem did actually sowed the seeds for the problems....no arguing here...If it embraced all the people as Cypriots, today we wouldn't have a problem...

In your second paragraph...Not true...you thnk the aboriginals of OZ, are the indegenous people of Australia...they came from somewhere or you think they materialized out of thin air...never the less it does not discount the fact that theay are the indegenous people of the OZ...

You need to look up the word indegenous observer...

The Nationlist days have gone, you are now part of a large family, whose rights are the same as those of the Cypriot people. Cypriots no longer can regard Cyprus as "our island " you forefitted those exclusive rights when you joined the European family. Just like your Cypriot counterparts who moved and remained in other parts of Europe, and were welcomed and treat their new found countries as home..

hey purdey whats does your post has to do with the price of fish?

The notion that Cyprus lost her identity and became “Greek” just because some Spartan merchants traded with Cypriots in Paphos, and an even smaller number of them decided to settle down in Cyprus, is as valid as the entire world being Japanese because everyone is buying Japanese electronic consumer goods coming off their merchant ships!

Since 1923, which seems to be the starting used on this thread, neither Greece or Turkey have colonised Cyprus. Prior to 1923 all Cypriots were technically Turkish. Between 1923 and 1960 all Cypriots were technically British. After 1960 all Cypriots were citizens of independent and sovereign Republic whose constitution allowed for Greek and Turkish communities.

Technically, I don't think any Cypriot has ever been Greek as Cyprus has never been ruled by Greece (excluding any Greeks who have acquired Cypriot nationality since 1960).

Good point ... so why all this fear for an ENOSIS with a country that we have always had self-determination from?

It was the ones which took away Cypriot self-determination like the Ottomans and the British that we have to gain our Human Rights back from .... and now Turkey.

Good observation. :D

The fact that Cyprus has never been ruled by Greece does not detract from the fact that in the middle of the last century there was a sustained campaign to make Cyprus part of Greece.

I believe the majority may have wanted ENOSIS with Greece as a way of removing more foreign control (British and Turkish).

But you are saying it was wrong for the majority to have their way, but right that the minority have their way and make Cyprus subject to Turkey.

I'm not arguing, because I don't even know what your point is. Aboriginies are surely the indigenous people of Australia. I don't think anyone denies it.

But to lead from there to say that the indigenous people of Cyprus are Greek (if that is what you are saying) is nonsense just from considerations of geography and history.

It has nothing to do with fish, but it trys to explain that Cyprus is no longer the sole domain of Cypriots. Piratis your comments are correct regarding the British and the occupancy of
land on Cyprus, but again your Government feels no need to expell or ask the British to leave, and Europe seems to follow suit.
All this posturing and argueing regarding the bases, never seems to enter any Goverment agenda, why I wonder ?
