The March of Folly...

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

The March of Folly...

Postby BirKibrisli » Thu Apr 10, 2008 12:24 pm

The woden Horse is outside the gates of TROY...A small minority of the people are suspicious. "Don't bring that horse inside," they warn. The majority thinks otherwise. They want the gift horse inside. They prevail.
And the rest is history...

King Karl 12th of Sweden,Napoleon Bonapart of France, and Adolf Hitler of Germany all make the same mistake..they go against the doubts and warnings of a small minority. They invade Russia in winter. The rest is history...

The industrial nations were increasingly polluting the atmosphere with Carbon-dioxide...A small minority of scientists kept warning about an impending ecological disaster...The majority dismissed them as panic merchants..Scientific determinism would solve the problem, they argued...
Today global warming is threatening our very existence on this planet,Earth...

When I read these examples taken by a Turkish journalist from the book "The March of Folly" by Barbara Tuchman,I thought of our own March of Folly...Once upon a time, a small minority of Cypriots sounded the alarm about the dangers of fanatical, unthinking Turkish and Greek nationalism..."We are Cypriots first and foremost,"they cried,"we must build one multilingual and multi religious nation of Cypriots,to prosper in our own country"...The majority did not agree. They ridiculed them, beat them up,killed some of them...Greek and Turkish nationalism prevailed...
The rest is history...And from where I stand, the March of Folly continues in Cyprus unabated...

So true Birkibrisli, but it is usually another small group of people who manipulate the majority into perverse decisions and believe they have the right to ignore or silence that small minority who actually know what they are talking about, i believe this is called Democracy :?

Really Shah?

I thought that Democracies are judged by how they treat their minorities. That is why there are such details as guaranteed individual rights, so that no person can be treated below a minimum standard, rights of assembly, expression, free press etc., so that no voice can be silenced and no protest unheard.

Have all these rights been applied in the TRNC since 1974? Obviously not. Hiding behind the survival lie will not convince anyone anymore. Unless you are saying that the TRNC has no ambition to be a Democracy, which would be fine if the decision makers state it clearly and take the word Republic out of the title.

Bullying people who think differently from the majority? Forming underground organisations in order to intimate and silence dissidents???
Performing acts of provocation and sabotage???Lying and cheating, misinforming the public, inflaming national sentiments by acts of propaganda and terrorism???? You must be kidding...

And as I and other sensible people have been saying....Why not search the Trojan horse before bringing it in......Why depend on the gods, or worse still, the good will of men? Someone has to stand up and shout..."The Emperor is naked"......As my dad always says.."Isini tamam yap".....

The GCs have done all that, yes,Eric, but so have the TCs...Time for you to accept this simple fact...Both communities have done their best to dig their own graves, even as they were thinking they were digging the other' graves...The danger is not yet passed. Both communities are yet in danger of being buried totally in the graves they have helped dig.
You keep calling me a convert, but you are wrong. I was born a Turkish Cypriot and will die a Turkish Cypriot. You,on the other hand, was born a TC but will die as a Turk...Who is the convert here???? :) :) :)
