A quiz on Cyprus/Greece

Postby Eric dayi » Tue Apr 08, 2008 6:35 pm

Right you lot, read the quote below and tell me who said it, to whom, when and why.

In all fairness the Greeks/GCs have an advantage over the TCs/Turks on this one so my apologies for being so unfair.

"#@%$ your Parliament and your Constitution. America is an elephant. Cyprus is a flea. Greece is a flea. If those two fleas continue itching the elephant they may just get whacked by the elephants trunk. Whacked good....We pay a lot of good American dollars to the Greeks, Mr. Ambassador. If your Prime Minister gives me talk about Democracy, Parliament and Constitutions, he, his Parliament and his Constitution may not last very long."

Lyndon Baines Johnson, 36th president of the United States, sworn into office in November 1963 upon the assassination of President John F. Kennedy by virtue of being his vice president.

IMHO, right up there with GWB.

That was Hugh Hefner back in 1954 while interviewing a couple of skinny girls (one Cypriot and one Greek) for his upcoming Elephant Club but to his dismay he couldn’t find any girls plumb enough to wear the trunks and ears so he canned the idea for a bunny club instead…

Two decades later, within the context of a slightly warmer Cold War, the U.S. had to intervene yet again in the domestic affairs of Greece. When liberal Prime Minister George Papandreou was elected in 1964, it did not sit well in Washington. Things went from bad to worse when Greece further annoyed its superpower benefactor by squabbling with Turkey over Cyprus, and then objecting to U.S. plans to partition the island. Democrat Lyndon Johnson summoned the Greek ambassador for a brief-and very instructive-lesson on how America handles its affairs. "Fuck your parliament and your constitution," said LBJ. "America is an elephant, Cyprus is a flea. If these two fleas continue itching the elephant, they may just get whacked by the elephant's trunk, whacked good...We pay a lot of good American dollars to the Greeks, Mr. Ambassador. If your Prime Minister gives me a talk about democracy, parliament, and constitutions, he, his parliament, and his constitution may not last very long."
Within a year, the Greek Royal Court was able to unseat Papandreou. It was later revealed that CIA Chief-in-Station in Athens, John Maury, had helped King Constantine in 1965 in the toppling of the Papandreou government. As new elections became inevitable, however, the CIA threw its considerable weight behind Colonel George Papadopoulos who had been on the Agency payroll for 15 years. Before that, he served as a captain in Nazi Security Battalions during the German occupation of Greece. The elephant most certainly did whack the flea in early 1967 when Papadopoulos seized control in a coup.

So the CIA enginereered things for Turkey ..... What's new?

You got the "who said it" right filitsa but you didn't answer the "to whom" or the "why" parts of the question.

Answer the questions and you will get the "point".

But then again a man who proposes to stick us TCs in "enclaves" scattered around the island and surrounded by GCs on all sides in order to make us TCs an easy target for the picking at the GCs pleasure and genuinely expects us TCs to accept it but is surprised that we do not, is probably not mentally in a position to get the "point".

eric, if you read my proposal carefully, you will understand how far your statements about it are false.

I do not paint you any colour, i have not judged you, and i hope for very little from anyone on this forum.

i regret now even asking you a simple question.

i will wait to see if you have something useful for us to consider...that's all, thank-you.
