Wild Karpas donkeys at risk of extinction
By Simon Bahceli
(Thursday, April 3, 2008)
A RARE breed of feral donkey, once labeled by Cyprus’ first president Makarios as “the only true Cypriots on Cyprus”, could be under threat of extinction from reckless hunters, disgruntled farmers and drought, environmental activists warned yesterday.

“Hunters are shooting at them for fun, and farmers are killing them because they say they damage their crops,” the head of the Turkish Cypriot branch of the Green Action group, Dogan Sahir, told the Cyprus Mail yesterday.

The breed is believed to be unique because it has managed to survive unassisted by humans in the wild since escaping from its owners hundreds of years ago.

““Locals phoned and told us that dead donkeys were being found in the area, and warned that if we didn’t act quickly there would soon be none left,” he told the Mail.

Local police, he said, were running ballistic tests to ascertain the kind of weapon or weapons that had been used to kill the donkeys.

As a hunter I am perplexed. What on earth do you do with a dead donkey? Are they edible? Do you stuff them as a trophy?

A tchnical aside, a shotgun cannot kill a donkey. In Cyprus only shotguns are allowed. So how are the donkeys shot? By whom?

And some more inaccuracies. It was no Makarios but Denktash who said the only true Cypriots are the donkeys. The donkeys were never wild. The feral donkeys in Karpasia were the result of the invasion, or as per the official TRNC tourist guide "after the peace operation of 1974 many donkeys found themselves without owners...." such a chilling statement. Where did this Simon dude study journalism?

Nikitas it sounds like they are just shot for fun and left lying around ....

Easy targets!

Regarding the weapons, looks like somebody asked the same question as you:
Local police, he said, were running ballistic tests to ascertain the kind of weapon or weapons that had been used to kill the donkeys.

Abuse seems to be the order of the day with the Turks-TCs

Leave your misogyny behind Zan ..... I have found out how much of a negative meme that is with you, and will be looked upon further ...

Now address your "countryman's" and current "custodian's" actions on the safety of the wild life, if you can!

How is this going to be curtailed?

You started it sweetheart so be warned that you will get it back ten fold....

If you also would like to make this a general no brain idiot that does not know the value of such animals rather than your normal racist saggy memes then we might just join you kin trying to do something about it but until then you can take a running jump whilst we decent people get on with saving these animals. Without you or your falses sentiments.

One assumes the same as you do with blackbirds and thrushes.......
As you point out only shotguns are allowed in Cyprus so if they are being shot with these then they have a lingering death..

Are such threats necessary in a civilised forum?

Rather an extreme overreaction don't you think Zan?

Any chance of focusing on resolving the threat from sickos (like you :? ) to our indigenous wildlife?

.... is this true in the occupied part of the island? ...... or does anything go there? ... they must have an awful lot of weapons around, what with over 40,000 well-armed Turkish soldiers (getting bored :? ) ....
