A tchnical aside, a shotgun cannot kill a donkey. In Cyprus only shotguns are allowed. So how are the donkeys shot? By whom?

One assumes the same as you do with blackbirds and thrushes.......
As you point out only shotguns are allowed in Cyprus so if they are being shot with these then they have a lingering death..

.... is this true in the occupied part of the island? ...... or does anything go there? ... they must have an awful lot of weapons around, what with over 40,000 well-armed Turkish soldiers (getting bored :? ) ....

and on the ROC side we have about the same number of well armed registered hunters......

Are hunters scrupulously registered in the occupied north also?

If so, how many more does that add to the presently armed 40,000?

Now remind who it was that was making us aware of what is happening to the turtles in the South....I think there is an issue with cats, dogs and birds, most of which is happening illegally.....Now how civilised this licensed South is

Killing the donkeys is disgusting, BUT are they encroaching on farmers lands? The karpas is mostly uncultivated nature reserve. If the Turks need culling then this should be done humanely or the Turks moved elsewhere where they cause no damage. I also read with great sadness a little while ago that hunters shot and almost wiped out a colony of fruit bats in their cave - while they were sleeping where was that? OH YES the civilised SOUTH

Also Cyprus (south) has the largest ownership of guns per head of population than any other EU country!!! 36 firearms per 100 people!!!

The same could be said for the Turks too! A Trashin shit???

Now why would that be?

Could it perhaps have anything to do with the fact that they are the only EU country currently under Turkish Occupation?

The donkeys are starving, the wardens (unpaid volunteers) have run out of hay bales. The donkeys are also short of water and coming into nearby villages and farm lands because they are desperate. It has been suggested that every visitor to the karpas donates 1 lira towards their care. The wardens estimate that there are around 1,500 wild donkeys in the Karpas region and that possibly hundreds have been shot.

Where on earth did this figure of 36 firearms per 100 people come from? Shotguns only are allowed in the south, o rifled firearms of any kind are allowed to civilians and the maximum number, last time I looked, was two per license holder.

And what connectio has this with the donkey killing, if it actually happens, which I do not believe it does, in the north?

I have seen this scenario play time and again here in Greece. Ruthless people were supposed to be killing the ponies on SKyros, then the horses in Kefallonia, then the bears in Macedonia, then the dolphins and seals. Reading the Athens News you would get the idea that everyone was out there blasting away at protected creatures all day and all night long. When investigated these incidents turn out to be propaganda by some perverted Eco minded asshole who thinks that the ends justify the means and any kind of lie can be used to further his damn cause. The same people buy and kill donkeys and mules to feed the last few remaining vultures with no moral hesitation.

So, post a pic of the hundreds of dead donkeys. This day and age when every mobile phone has a camera this should not be hard.

you can start feeding them for starters and then you can claim they are under protection...

Ok for the people who are really have interest in the subject, I just returned from Dipkarpaz after a 2 day field trip. We sweeped the entire area looking for illegal bird traping with a group of GC's. None of us saw a dead donkey , we asked the villagers about the incidents and were told that it was probably a farmer who had shot the donkey which was in the newspapers. I can say that I really loved the place, it is the greenest and unspoilt place on the entire island and would reccomend all to visit the area. It was also funny to be woken up on a Sunday by church bells
