Moving to Cyprus

Postby MacDonald44 » Fri Apr 04, 2008 4:20 pm

Hi All,

My wife and I are looking at moving out to Cyprus to live in Sep - Oct. I have read and completed a cost for moving my car and would like some advice. I am registered disabled and need my car are there any deductions for this? I am 44 years old but unable to work so I am sort of retired, I have a Military pension and things like mobility. Any help would be appreciated.

On another note can some one give me an idea of how much it will cost to move our dog to Cyprus. He is a boxer, 1 year old and will be about 25kg when we are ready to move.

Any ex-military people especially (1RHF) love to have a chat.

Regards

George

Hello George,

There are a lot of threads on this forum with regard to shipping your car (a lot from myself!) and the general census of opinion is do'nt bother.Cyprus may be in Europe but nobody has told the Customs and excise yet! It depends on how old your car is,what cc and if you have owned it for a certain time.Contact Cypriot Customs direct and get them to put everything in writing!
With regard to your mobility,I do'nt think you get any benefits in Cyprus once you leave the UK ( but things may have changed) again, check your facts before leaving the UK,as you could end up with a lot less income than you have now and things are not cheap in Cyprus anymore. There is as you know a good military prescence on the Island, retired,so the previous contact is a good one.
Best of luck,it is a lovely place, but not paradise.Animal poisoning is rampant so think about your dog when bringing him over.Ask others on here or browse other subjects going back.

George, try the bases in Cyprus for info. I know you are Ex Services but they will often go that extra mile with help and advise.

Hi George,

I have a disabled son and he is not even allowed to go on holiday without informing the authorities and loosing his disability benefits for the time he is away, are you sure you will still get your benefits if you move out of the UK?

Hi Eric,

Sorry to hear about your son, is he paid through the Veterans Agency. I do not get any benefits from my local authority, this maybe why they stop his. Before I come over to Cyprus I would have done a lot of homework in relation to my disability and how I will be affected by moving abroad. Thank you for the tip about the British Legion another grate body that I forgot about.
