There were two UN guys stationed on each side of the path on the corner of kykkou street. One was chatting with someone and the other was enjoying the fireworks They both ignored the fact that there were TC police two feet away from them. I saw the TC police officer walk right up to where they were. He was just sauntering up and down rather than 'patrolling' in a strict sense.
They had run a cordon down the middle from their checkpoint up to where the UN was so there was some order, one line for people walking down and the other for those waking towards the Greek side.
No one seemed bothered that he was there. although technically there was an agreement that the cops from both sides would not enter the buffer zone. The GC police didn't move beyond their spot the whole time I was observing this - sometime between 7.30 and 8pm - and they had no cordon set up that infringed into the buffer zone. I think the UN should actually have done that on both ends. Everything I saw happened before the GC police closed the crossing so the TC entry into the buffer zone initially had nothing to do with any protestors. The protesting happened after the closing, and TC officers may have gone in for that. I have no idea as I wasn't there at that point.
