Greek Cypriots shut Ledra checkpoint/ 4 another 50 years?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

Have you thought of the fact that she might be angry that the Turkish Army is occupying her country. A lot of people are angry about this, me included.

Well have you thought of the fact that we both have things to be angry about, yet we don't all express it through racism.

All of that can be resolved. All you need is an open mind.

I do not think that GCs are out to get the TCs. We just want the occupation to end and a lasting peace.

And I am not a racist.

Time for me to retire. Goodnight.

If I may interject, anger at what has happened is everybody's right. Its only natural. Its when things go OTT that is not acceptable.

Goodnight Bafidis. That means I cannot phone my fatherinlaw in Toowoomba/Leyburn Australia. I promised him. Too late.

He is doing bad service to the cause of Cyprus but I will not call him a crook. Simply, I will remind him that the period when the different view was vilified ended on February 17 2008.

The issue with Ledras is not new and it goes back to 1974 when the Turkish army advanced into the buffer zone. Prior to the opening of the gate it was agreed that Turkish soldiers would withdraw from the buffer zone. This was a compromise on behalf of Talat so that the last obstacles would be removed and the street would eventually open. Talat needed to perform a delicate act here in order to satisfy our (correct) demands. On Thursday night Turkish Cypriot policemen entered the buffer zone, not Turkish soldiers. Immediately we closed the gate, as though we were looking for a suitable excuse to do so. The wise thing to do under the circumstance was to speak to the UN (its representatives were standing just 15 meters from our police) and ask them to implement the agreement. Hastily, we closed the gate first and then, after about two hours, we asked the UN to take action. The question to be answered here is why we behaved in such seemingly amateurish way. The answer to this question goes like this:

The remnants of the Papadopoulos administration are waiting in the wings for Christofias to make a mistake so that they can begin the blame game and lead astray the renewed effort for solution. They want to kill hope and to this end we can expect some more spectacular antics from them real soon now. Ledra is just a small fish with symbolic value only. The Cyprus issue is the big fish and this is what is at stake.

BINGO!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice, GR of some pages ago. I see you are well acquainted with the scientific method.

Let me tell you a true story now. It was early 70's and I was a student in London. On the floor above where I was renting (5 pounds per week then) rented a student from Greece. Diogenis was his name. As he had no refrigerator he would bring his food to the refrigerator in my flat. One day I was very hungry and had no money to buy food. Reluctantly I opened the refrigerator and ate the ham that belonged to Diogenis. Come evening Diogenis came down the stairs and when he realised his ham was no more he gave me a good old roasting. He warned me, at the end, that if I repeated the act, he would bring food to the refrigerator no more!

When I hear people boasting that we will close the gate next time a couple of pseudo policemen venture into the buffer zone, I remember the story I just described. Hopefully, some people will understand what I mean.

Then, I would like to comment on the naive people of this forum that think that politicians mean exactly what they say in public. In this case, political analysts would be looking for new jobs, had it been as simple as this. Christofias came back after hardly arriving at the UK because he did not want to leave DIKO deal with another crisis situation. Nicholas, that is Papadopoulos's son, only the other day accused Christofias that he offered "earth and water" to the occupying forces in the deal he made on Ledras. You can understand of course who told him to say this.

Of course, Kifeas and GR will go on thinking that the issue of two Turkish Cypriot policemen straying into the buffer zone was the reason Christofias came back to Cyprus.

Of course, the papers said it ...
