Greek Cypriots shut Ledra checkpoint/ 4 another 50 years?

How can we solve it? (keep it civilized)

It seems to be a lot of fuss about very little as the gate has now re-opened.

Iceman, please give us a break mate!

This was the 3rd time that this happened in just 11 hours. The first one was around 8 am, just before the opening of the crossing and the 2nd one around noon. Should I guess that in both these occasions the tc police were after demostrators as well? Hmmm..

Having said the above I think that its time for TCs to take their fate in their hands and tell the generals that the time has come for the Cypriots to be left alone and decide for their future..

PS: Respect to those GCs and TCs that reacted in the face of the provocation by the tc security forces and pressed things towards the right direction.

Tell me,has TC police tried to gain any ground on the previously opened checkpoints?

I agree with your comment regarding the GC's & TC's who reacted against the closure...

Another neutral report (Al Jazeera):

"NICOSIA, Cyprus - Greek and Turkish Cypriot authorities reopened the divided capital's Ledra Street on Thursday, but were forced to close it for nearly two hours following a dispute over how to police the street, long considered a symbol of the island's partitioning."

Could it be that policing the buffer zone was not thought about in depth. It should be UN, but from pictures I have seen, there were only a handful of UN, not enough for crowd control.

Iceman, I am not implying anything about gaining ground but its is really absurd to have TC police in the buffer zone even before the opening of the crossing, don't you think?

What I believe is that this is another mind game by the generals in order to show who is calling the shots and create problems to Talat. I don't believe that Talat himself gave the order to TC policemen to enter the buffer zone, after all tc police is under the orders of the Turkish Commander in Chief and not the the civilian leadership of the TCs.

Your comments please.

PS: UN have confirmed that the agreement was for UN and only UN forces to patrol the buffer zone and nobody else, be it GC police or TC police should interfere.

The opening of Ledra became reality after a certain agreement between Chistofias & Talat and UN involution. This agreement was violated last night by Tcs therefore the decision of Cy gov to close the check point was correct.
...and if happens again the Cy gov should take the same action.
When you agree something you have to honour your word or signature.

In this case, your moron police decided to station themselves 2/3rds into the buffer zone which is not theirs to patrol. If yuo people can't even follow basic rules what hope is there for a united Cyprus? I guess that is lost on you because you don't give a flying f**k about a united Cyrpus.

Mikkie stop talking from your arse...we now know what exactly happened last night...
The reason TC police left their position was to warn the protesters your stupid police allowed into the buffer zone,NOT TO GAIN GROUND...allowing demonstrators into the buffer zone was not a part of the agreement!!
demonstrate elswhere, not in the buffer zone!!!

That was UN's job not TC "police". You have no jurisdiction in the buffer zone. That's the agreement. Who is talking from his arse now buddy? :x

Le Monde

UPDATE:
Turkish and Greek Cypriot authorities re-opened late Thursday the Ledra Gate to crossings in either direction after officials from the UN peace force held talks with the two sides. The brief closure of the gate on the evening of the opening ceremony showed how fragile the situation is and how quickly problems could emerge. The re-opening came after protesters gathered on the two "sides" to protest the closing of the gate.

Halil,

It was neither the RoC or "TRNC" police jurisdiction to enter the buffer zone. It was UN's jurisdiction ONLY. Do you understand that? :?

No kurupetos no ....OXİ ......OXİ

No one can stop the opening of the gate from now on ......

To find excuse , does not help at all ......

it was not easy to control the huge crowed ...... it was only first day of it .... your leaders didn't hope that GC's will show that much interest ....
Civilians were not thinking the way you are thinking..... at both sides people were very happy .... there is a very small groups at both side that they were not happy at all. Last night all the foregine diplomats were also passing by same rules .... they were also dancing and eating lokmades at Turkish part of the Nicosia .There was a music groups from GC's side and they were singing Greek music at the TC's sector of the Nicosia . Both GC's and TC's were singing and dancing with music groups ....

They were chanting '' Peace at Cyprus Can not Stop '' they were saying in 3 languages mate ....
