It was a very sentimental morning. History was written as the long closed street was opened and people walked through it for the first time in nearly have a century. On the Turkish side the occasion was marked with music, songs, peace banners and cakes. I found myself surrounded by hundreds of like-minded (to borrow a phrase that was thrown at me just the other day) people from both communities. It was simply exhilarating and I felt so much at ease. There were people hugging each other with spirits heightened by the renewed prospect of solution.
On my way back I heard on the radio the miserable politicians of DIKO and EDEK that tried in vein to play down a most significant moment in the history of our island.
My friends, the momentum for solution is back! There is still hope after all. I saw it in the eyes of the people of Ledra Street. The celebrations continue tonight. Come and see for yourself.
