It has been reported that the Turkish Cypriot aide Ozdil Nami, Greek Cypriot aide Yorgos Yakovu, Mayor of Lefkosa Turkish Municipality Cemal Bulutoglulari and the Mayor of South Lefkosa Eleni Mavrou will gather at the Lokmaci gate tomorrow morning for the opening ceremony.

The ceremony will take place at 9 and the Gate will be opened for public crossings by 9.30.

Speaking to the BRT newsroom, the Mayor of Lefkosa Turkish Municipality Cemal Bulutoglulari has stated that the Turkish Cypriot Side will be completing the preparatory work on its side by this evening.

Mr Bulutoglulari and Mrs Mavrou have held a meeting at the buffer zone to discuss the final details for crossings at the Lokmaci Gate.

As one of the final key works in the area, the paravane in the northern part of the Gate was removed this morning.

Who cares? I don't. :x

I have been their many times. The last visit was 2006.

I have also visited the occupied areas. I had a car accident on the road to Apostolos Andreas, a TC rear ended me.

The pseudo police came, I was taken to Trikomo Police Station and seperated from my wife. I was placed in an interogation room for about 5 hours and then questioned about the accident for 3 hours. They had to bring a TC translator during the interrogation.

I thought I was going to be arrested.

Great news Halil

For those naysayers, what possible harm can arise from opening a pedestrian crossing ? After all, the issue of whether to open any crossing was decided years ago - this is no longer a matter of principle. It has simply become a matter of practicalities and policy. The whole peace process - whether expressed by the UN, EU, GC, TC, Greek, Turkish, local muncipality - anticipates the gradual opening of borders. No serious body is arguing about closing borders or speaking in terms of 'traitors'.

Highly exaggerated I'm sure. He wouldn't tell us if he was even given a VIP treatment, would he?

The gate will be open and the Kurds and Anatolians of north Nicosia will be able to engage in cultural exchanges withe Sri Lankans, Indians, Eastern Europeans and othe sundry visitors who live in southern Nicosia. The old city of Nicosia is less than a former shadow of itself. And before any one jumps on me for the above, I read about the plight of the northern part of the walled city in Sener Levent's articles and those of other TC commentators. The south I saw for myself. There is nothing there to remind people of the old neighborhoods.

As for the place in general, I lived there as a child and found the walled city stifling and claustrophobic. I was glad when we moved to Famagusta. Walled cities are a drag.

I'm not looking forward to an over-congested Ledras street... I don't know where all those queues of people are going to line up given that there's already like 2,000 shoppers there on some days... :?
