My contacts tell me that the following announcemeent will be made today.
After secret negotiations which have been taking place, a major redevelopment at Ercan has been announced.
Presidential spokesman, Nisan Aptal, has said that the Authorities in both the TRNC and RoC have accepted that sooner rather than later, the TRNC will be accepted into the EU. With this in mind, broad agreement has been reached to facilitate this membership.
With immediate effect, Ercan Airport will be renamed Nicosia International Airport, Ercan. The existing terminal building will be renamed The Makarios building.
Agreement has also been reached that, although not yet part of the EU, EU entry and residency regulations will apply in order to protect the integrity of the EU borders. These regulations will be applied from today at all points of entry to the TRNC.
The airport will be a gateway to both sides of the island, and work will be started to widen the existing road that leads from the airport to the border east of Nicosia. This road will be built to motorway standard, and will be extended to link with the existing motorway system in southern Cyprus.
The cost of building this new road will be met by Syrian financier Youf Bin Aad.
Presidential spokesman, Nisan Aptal, also announced that contracts have been signed for the construction of this road by a major TRNC construction company. My cousin has a fine record in the construction industry, and will complete this motorway project on time.
It has also been announced that a rapid transit link will be built from Nicosia to the airport. The Bedesten, which is close to the soon to be reopened Ledra Street, and is currently being renovated will become the city check-in area. Part of the adjacent Bandabuliya will be utilised as a duty free shop, bringing much need revenue to that area of Nicosia. The transit station will, be underground at Selimiye Square, with the track surfacing near Haspolat. A future extension to Famagusta is planned, with work starting one year from today.
The announcement has been greeted with enthusiasm by the EU ambassadors to Cyprus. Both the Italian ambassador, Aprile Ingannare, and the Spanish ambassador, Abril Tonto, have said that this announcement shows what can now be expected in Cyprus.
