For my money desalination and proper management of water at every level, including personal level, is the way to do it. And there ought to be a department at every university dealing with water technology and research.

You are dreaming too "ma friend". You know what greek people call you there? They say you're like gypsies in my country for them.
Do you think that's a good thing?

L.E. they are other racist bastards
another L.E. and you know what guys, I'm not angry 'cause you misstreat everybody and you are all racists (I hope not all), I AM ANGRY because I have no water. Period.

Nice idea BUT you don't have the infrastructure to deal with the water when it arrives unless you fill up road tankers at the port.

You put the word "bastards" in the plural. Who is the other?

Bill, what the hell are you talking about? There's no water, importing it won't do the trick.
Everybody is so proud about their lovely Cyprus, but Cyprus cannot even afford to provide water. Nice country, what do you guys can say about this?

A friend of mine heard there is 2 months of water left, so they had to put in these extreme measures. Rumour is we will only get one night a week of water if we do not curb our ways. She currently can't go to the toilet as it won't flush with no water and there are 6 people where she works. Nice... Apparently the Holiday Inn ran out of water too. So there slowly goes the tourist industry (I wouldn't visit again if I was on holiday; plenty more nice places to visit where I can go to toilet and not risk disease etc). <sarcasm>Lucky that industry is currently really strong and not the main earner for Cyprus eh?<sarcasm/>

I just wonder what in hell they were thinking to leave it go this bad? Honestly, stupid as hell. Plus just cutting everyone off seems extreme. What if there is 10 people in my house? I get the same amount as my neighbour with 1 person? Eh? And why not just price really highly for people going over a certain amount. Would stop the idiots watering their house every day and everyone has a meter do they not? Personally I would rather pay through the nose (like Electricity here) if I used more water than worry about having a shower or going to toilet.

Cheers

Kikapu,

I have been researching desalinators lately and so far there are two systems I have come across that show any kind of reliability. One is the reverse osmosis gear, which I presume you had on boats. The other is flash distillation which is not suitable for small scale use. Most companies that sell reverse osmosis gear are honest enough to stress the need for maintenance and the short life cycle of the membranes. It is tough but better than going thirsty.

In the course of the research I came across some neat ideas, like the greenhouse that uses sea water to cool itself in the summer and at the same time desalinates the water and uses it for irrigation, all done with clever physics and no membranes etc. It is an English idea being tested now in the Gulf and the Canaries.

Another clever idea is the combination of solar panels and a desalinator so as to avoid power costs. In fact the solar desalinator produces a surplus of power which can be sold via the grid. Seems just right for a sunny dry place like Cyprus.

Fine but whats that got to do with YOUR water supply. What was Tpapa doing all this time? Water shortage in Cyprus has been around since time immemorial, why was nothing done. Unless you are blaming foreigners, the times we are discussing with Nikitas, we never had any tourists and we still had the water shortages.

Now that is no way to refer to our motherlands! I mean Turkey is going to lay some pipe on us, Greece is going to tank us.

A delegation came from Cyprus to discuss water provision. From what I hear though is that Greece also has a shortfall of water this summer. Things are going to get tough all around.

Now if we all had rain water collection cisterns in our houses, and grey water recirculation, and farmers were educated about the use of drip irrigation things probably would not be so bad. Funny thing is that the biggest producer of drip irrigation systems in the world is Greece. Most of it is exported though, Greek farmers prefer to spray water 40 feet in the air, at midday, so it can come down to earth again and puddle in the soil.

It's sad, but I really think that a few years in this direction and Cyprus will look like a third world country.
It's not even hard if we demolish some few big buildings, no water, no tourists, no foreigners who would want to come and work here, prices all going up.
Does this look good? Don't think so. :(
