Fetta or Halloumi

Postby webbo » Sun Mar 30, 2008 9:49 pm

Being a great lover of cheeses (great source of calcium you know, just forget about the cholesterol!), I just wondered which Cypriot cheese you prefer between my two favourites - Fetta and Halloumi?

I love them both as they are just so tasty and flexible in so many dishes. DELICIOUS!

I do not, however. enjoy the taste of 'anari' Sorry folks!

I refuse to take part in narrow, racist polls restricted to Cypriot/Greek/Turkish (?) cheeses which don't include an option to vote for the king of cheeses that is Stilton.

There's abs. no need to apologise. It's just that almost all cheeses dissapoint me except Stilton and a small number of the stronger/smellier French ones. A nice bit of camenbert always goes down well but you have to triple wrap it otherwise it stinks the fridge out.

As to the C/G/T chesses in the poll. What can I say but to give my honest traitorous opinion by saying that halloumi is almost always bland. It's often plasticky and squeaky. The only good one I have ever had was of the village/home-made type.

Feta is ok in salads, but trust me, try a bit of stilton in a Cypriot salad and you'll never go back to feta.

Anari is delightful in the sweet pastry form whose name I can't remember.

I am really annoyed because I wrote a post .. first 8) .. and it somehow has not appeared.... Anyway it was along the lines of:

Feta is Greek ................ and best served on salads (or made into that dip)
Halloumi is useful grilled BBqued or au natural in sandwiches ...

Anari is best grated on pastas or if very fresh ... serve with a sprinkling of sugar ... :D

Yeah my dad likes to eat Halloumi which is all 100% goat and sheep milk. The stuff is all yellow and the entire kitchen stinks when he opens the lid. He says it's the real thıng and the stuff we eat is utter rubbish, the plastic type. I hate fetta. Whats the name of the cheese they put in womans stocking and dry on the cloths line? We call is "davar peyniri" , it's used to make Pilavuna's.
