Kenya opposition halts talks

By Katie Nguyen and Daniel Wallis

NAIROBI: Kenya's opposition suspended talks with President Mwai Kibaki's party on Tuesday and police fired tear gas to scatter opposition supporters protesting against deepening deadlock over a power-sharing cabinet.

Kibaki and rival Raila Odinga delayed naming a cabinet on Monday after disagreeing over how to share out ministries and traded blame over who was responsible for the deadlock.

The cabinet is central to a deal on ending Kenya's post-election crisis.

Anyang' Nyong'o, secretary-general of Odinga's Orange Democratic Movement, or ODM, said talks would be suspended until Kibaki's party "fully recognizes the 50/50 power-sharing arrangement and the principle of portfolio balance."

Government spokesman Alfred Mutua condemned the walkout and accused ODM of playing games.

"They are the ones who do not want the coalition. How can they walk out of talks and make demands? Demands are made at the negotiating table," he said.

Should they have gone all the way and given one side the license to persecute the other in stead...........It has to be appreciated from both sides mate but perhaps they learned from Makarios how to destroy it....Isn't he big in Africa   8) 8)

Democracy does not mean persecution in today's modern society of those who are not the majority. It means being an equal citizen and accepting your place in that society. Swiss Germans are 69% in Switzerland and the Swiss French, Italians, and Romansh make up the rest. Have you heard of any Persecutions of those "minorities" Zan.

It's called being CIVILIZED. Start accepting true Democracy for Cyprus rather than asking for undemocratic means like in Kenya.

Did you not understand the point I made about both sides appreciating what ever agreement is on the table    You also need to look up what democracy means and how it can take different shapes at different times before you spout off rubbish about what it is.....Don't ask me cause I have no idea......It means a whole other thing to the "RoC" and those in power than to the rest of the world.....Persecution and the exodus of TCs from their own island is one interpretation that we will not accept....

Sure Democracy comes in different packages.

50%-50% Power share and a Veto Power is not a Democracy of any kind.

If you believe in that, then lets give it to ALL ethnic groups in Cyprus and not just to TC's and GC's.

How does that sound to you Zan.??

Now, lets see how confused you really are.

First you say this:

You also need to look up what democracy means and how it can take different shapes at different times before you spout off rubbish about what it is

Then you say this:

Don't ask me cause I have no idea...

Don't worry, I will not ask you what a Democracy is.

Then agreed division is the only solution left as TCs will never accept being a minority in a GC run GC state.

Then you should make the offer to the RoC on a 82%-18% basis for them to consider it. If you want an agreed partition that bad, then it should be an easy sell to the TC's to accept the above percentages. The RoC may accept your offer or they may not, and if they did, don't be surprised if they will veto the "TRNC" as well as Turkey in joining the EU in the future. But hey, what do you care about that stupid EU Christian Club anyway. You can form a Club of Two with Turkey and call it "Ataturk's Turkish Club" with Veto Power in which a True Democracy will not be needed or asked for from their soon to be members. Soon you will have other Turkish minorities from other countries wanting to join your club. I think it will work.!!!

That would be our business Kikapu which clubs or unions we join, if it were up to me I would accept 18%+ tomorrow and move on with our lives. All that is needed now is time for other TCs to see that there will never be a solution with GCs, then they will accept a reduction is land for agreed partition.

Then I would really suggest to you VP and all the Neo Partitionist is to first convince Turkey that EU is not in their best interest, therefore they should support your Partition Dreams and to forget about the welfare of their own 70 million who's individual average income is barely above $5,000 US Dollars a year. Have you noticed, despite Dollars decline in the past few months, the New Turkish Lira has declined more than the Dollar. This will add to inflation and loss of purchasing power. The North using the YTL as their main currency has no doubt seen prices go up in recent times. Just what is the inflation rate in the North anyway.??

If Turkey's EU hopes are permanently destroyed, expect far worse crises with their finances which will effect the North as well. So VP, what you may think is good for you, may not be in the best interest of Turkey. I would suggest that we all find a workable solution that is in the best interest of everyone, and if we are to live as part of Europe, then we need to adopt European values, which means we can't have a undemocratic system. Most of the Neo Partitionist enjoy True Democracy in other countries that they live/lived in, but when it comes to their own country, they do not want it.

What is wrong with this picture.
