Limassol District - A Day Out With A Difference!

Postby juliesewell » Sat Mar 29, 2008 12:43 pm

Hi,

Thought I would share these photos with you all. We started our journey at 10am yesterday (Fri 28 March) and took the start of this track down to the Chromite Mines and continuing until we reached the bottling plant at Ayios Nikolaos, finishing off with the Asbestos Mines at Amiantos. We finished at the end of the line at around 1pm.

A fab day out, courtesy of Barry from Pachna - who knows his "stuff"

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/1262 ... 008nk8.jpg - Some odd, circular rock formations.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8595 ... 008rt9.jpg - More of same rock formations.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/8625 ... inevq3.jpg - Main engine room of Chromite Mine.

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/671/ ... wnmtc9.jpg - Start of overhead pulley system for transporting Chromite down to the crushing shed.

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4893 ... aossy0.jpg - Waterfall at Ay Nikoloaos (just above the bottling plant)

http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/4080 ... ianbm6.jpg - views across to the Asbestos Mine at Amiantos.

Would be interested to have your comments on what all those pipes are at the waterfall.... They seem to be diverting the water supply towards land, rather than allowing the water to run freely.

The photos may not be of the best quality, as I took them with the phone on my camera (Nokia 6111).

Hallo Juliesewell. Welcome to the forum.

Lovely pictures there. Also the rocks you talk about are interesting. The 'geologists' on the forum will have something to say about them surely.

Is the Asbestos mine at Amiandos still in operation? If it is I am surprised. Years ago when I visited, we were shown around and mention was made at the time of the special Hospital nearby where Amoandos workers were treated for special illnesses. Ofcourse now we all know about the dangers of Asbestos and mesothelaemia etc.

Regards

DA

I love walking down that track past the chromite mines but have never made it as far as Agios Nikolaos.
None of the mines or quarries in the Troodos area are functional any longer.

Yes, thank you Juliesewell. I have not yet been to limassol! I do agree that the pipes at the waterfall look a bit odd - more practical than aesthetic! As for an asbestos mine - I didn't even know that Cyprus had such a thing. Thank you for sharing your day out......

Walking?

We drove it in a Honda CRV - crazy, I know! The track was decidedly "dodgy" at times and our wheels were on the very edge of a crumbling road on many occasions.....

Good day out though and I would certainly be very interested to have comments from any Geologists on the rock formations and opinions on those pipes at the waterfall ;-)

If any of you had ever tried geocaching, you would have been to a lot of these places. You drove right past a number of 'caches' on your day out and probably had no idea. ;)

www.geocaching.com

There are currently 125 active caches in Cyprus, all waiting to be found by people who love to explore the countryside.

Great pictures, thank you for taking the time and posting them, would you mind if i send them to a friend of mine here in the uk, as he likes this sort of stuff about rocks.

Yes, walking. This is peace and quiet at its finest. The furthest I have got is about half way down to Agios Nikolaos and back, but I am limited to the four and a half hours you get at Troodos square if you go on the bus!

I hope to stay at one of the hotels at Troodos one day and walk all the way to Kakopetria and back.

I did a marathon last year from the trout farm at Platres, past Caledonia falls, right over the summit of Mt Oylmpus and down past the mines into Kakopetria. Bloody hard route, but great scenery.

Hi Mark
No problem - send them to whoever you like. I've also sent them to a friend in UK, who is studying Geology through Open University.

Your friend may also be interested to look at this site, which covers some of the details regarding the Troodos Ophiolite sequence (a unique formation of our island) and illustrates some parts of the salt lake at Akrotiri and Kouris river: http://www.soton.ac.uk/~imw/Cyprus-Akro ... -Coast.htm
