Hi,
Just got this e-mail hope you all sign it

Hi,
Please see email below from Demetris. You could help the Green Party ban poisons such as Lanate by asking your friends to sign the petition.
See below.
Regards
Steve Carr

Hi Steve,
I've read about the tragic incident that you experienced and about the campaign you wanted to organize. I'm not sure at what stage the campaign is at but I think you might be interested to know that there is an initiative to collect signatures (electronically) to do just this...ban Lanate use in Cyprus. It's a move to back an MP legislation proposal due to come up. You can find more information in:
http://cyprusgreens.blogspot.com/2008/03/lanate.html
It's in Greek but it only asks that you cut/paste the short text and fill in your name/phone and send it to [email protected]

Alternatively you can complete the form I attach and send it to [email protected]

I'm trying to spread this as much as possible although I'm not affiliated in any way with the cyprus green party. Just had the same tragic experience as you...

cheers..

Demetris

Sorry, banning Lanate is not a good idea. It has various uses for crops with no known alternatives. Banning Lanate would have an inflationary effect on Cyprus.

Instead, it should be strictly regulated - only registered and licensed technicians should be allowed to buy, sell and use it. People caught storing or using it without a license would carry a monetary penalties of, say, 750 Euros per offense. Get caught 10 times, pay 7500 Euros. Failure to pay the fine results in a tax lien on the offender's house (or the house / apartment the offender lives in). Anyone caught selling it to someone without a license would lose their license to sell it and be fined 5000 Euros.

Bottom line, people need to eat; therefore Lanate has valid uses. Because of the danger it presents to the average citizen though, steps need to be taken to remove it from the average person's hands.

Hear Hear - though not sure I want to eat food / drink wine that's been treated with the stuff. Think the euro's already had an inflationary effect on Cyprus ..... but that's off topic

Lannate (I mis-spelled it above too  ) breaks down quickly so there's very little danger as far as consumption in the food supply goes. Chances are, if you've eaten melons, potatoes, cucumbers, chick peas, etc, grown in a great number of countries (yes, including Cyprus), then you have eaten product that was treated with Lannate.
