Fresco painting in Orthodox churches

Postby Talisker » Thu Mar 27, 2008 10:45 am

Yesterday I visited the St Raphael church near Pomos on the west coast of Cyprus. For those who don't know it, this is quite a new church (early 1990s), and has the most amazing location and internal frescoes - fascinating depictions of biblical scenes with stunning, almost translucent, colours, and some amazing 3D effects. As there was a service underway I did not feel free to take any photographs but found some on the web for those of you who are interested (see below). I've been impressed by many frescoes I've seen before in ancient Orthodox churches, but was really excited by the modern, fresh style within the St Raphael church. Does anyone know who would have painted these frescoes - are these specialist painters, monks, or adaptable artists - or know of other churches in Cyprus with stunning modern frescoes?

Hi Lena,
Do they get an apprenticeship, or is there a school/college course to obtain experience or a qualification? I'm interested to know how the training system works.

.... Sounds ominously like a threat :?

Have the Turks finished looting and desecrating all the Churches in the north?

No problem, Tess, these are the only images I could find on the web, and although they are pretty good, like most photographs they do not do justice to reality. By chance I met the architect in Paphos many years ago, but hadn't visited the church at that time and didn't have the bundle of questions for him I now have. I hope you get the chance to visit St Raphael church sometime - it really is worth it.
Regards,

Or have GC's stopped it in the South?

http://www.trncinfo.com/TANITMADAIRESI/ ... nglish.htm

It happened on both sides - so don't just cry and moan about what happened in the North.

Both sides have done it and it was and is not acceptable.
