Shortenings your posts is surely an improvement :?

Talisker, thank you for the pictures of the frescos, I too visited that church two years after it was completed I couldn't remember if the frescos were there or no so it's been a nice reminder of the beauty of iconography.

Thanks

A few months ago I was in the village of Kathikas near Paphos and noticed the church door was open. Went in and found that the frescoes were being replaced and repainted. The artist invited me up on to the scaffolding erected within the church so I could closely observe his work. To my surprise some of the flat surface frescoes were painted not directly on the wall, but back in the artist's studio, then transported to the church, cut to fit the arches high in the walls, and glued into place. He gave me some of the cut-offs from these frescoes, painted vividly with acrylic paints (shown below). He also showed me some of the gold leaf he used to embellish the frescoes in situ. Painting of frescoes on curved surfaces is undertaken directly on the walls and ceilings of the church. Unfortunately I didn't have my camera at the time to take photographs of his work and the processes involved, but would recommend anyone passing through Kathikas to visit the church and have a look at the results of his labours for yourself. I was really impressed with his skills, talent and willingness to enthusiastically show me how these frescoes are crafted.

I don't know of the artist but I visited the Church in 2003 and was very impressed with it.

Hoping to take my friends there in April as I will be staying in Polis so we will be quite near.

There are many great, but underrated, villages in the Polis area. :D

Some 'mukhtars' are slower than others at spending the coffers on improving village life and appearances!
