FUCK OFF ORACLE

Why don't you go use that language to your wife and kids, you obviously have no shame on using it on a woman.

Why don't you FUCK OFF you Thieving git

The trouble with you F turks is you just want us to take it lying down, any resistance and out come the swords, when you all know what you can do.

Oracle I am with you, sock it to em.

They don't understand anything else.

I will politely turn down your invitation. Sorry.

Can you substantiate your accusations against me?

Have a good day.

Bit of respect please guys, this thread was about churches, frescoes and iconography. Take your profanities elsewhere.

Fine, but we do not see you telling her to give it a rest. But then you too support thread hi-jacking. Congratulations.

What is it with you Deniz? You seem to be on the attack all the time.

By 'her' I presume you mean Oracle. She hasn't used profanities on this thread so why would I ask 'her' to desist? Seems to me she has pissed you off/provoked you on another thread and you tracked her down to this thread to start the swearing off big time. This has nothing to do with this thread which was meant to be informative and delighting in the artistic skills of iconographers.

You are also having a go at me accusing me of 'thread hi-jacking'. I rarely engage with this forum, so am somewhat surprised at your accusation. You clearly wanted a fight with me the other evening regarding Nil's thread when I challenged (i) her excessive use of Turkish on this forum, and (ii) her avatar. You then intervened, and would not back down despite the fact you you would not answer any of my questions or points, and had little to contribute yourself. I don't intend wasting my time in another exchange, as a genuine discussion requires us both to respond to each others statements and points, and you appear to be as slippery as an eel, won't concede on any points, etc. I hope I am man enough that if I was beaten in an argument or discussion I would admit it, but you don't appear to have these qualities.

Thanks for trashing the thread. I might have shown it to my son, who was with me when I visited the church, as he might have been interested in the information provided by Nikitas, Jerry and others on iconography, but now that the thread is littered with profanities initiated by you, I won't bother.

In Mount Athos there are priests who are graduate materials scientists who are involved in the research and documentation of icons. THeir work includes sophisticated technology like laser scanners, Xrays etc to read below the present icon and determine if there was a previous layer, literally a whole other icon. IT was not unusual for old icons to be used as boards for new painting. I cannot remember the name of the monastery where this work is carried out, I can find it out for you if you want. Despite appearances, Mount Athos is a surprisingly modern place sometimes!

And you are right, paints were mostly oils with ground pigments made from minerals etc. This is not evidence that I am an icon lover, I learned it because of another hobby altogether where linseed oil is used. So I pestered my iconographer friend for information, which he generously provided. Some amazing colors can be made with ground rock, like lapis, mixed in with oil or egg yolk. A French painter (not icons) working in Greece has used ground marble for his paints and the effect is spectacular.

Thanks Nikitas, this is a good site about Mount Athos icons:

http://www.macedonian-heritage.gr/Athos ... osArt.html

I also found out there are icon-painting schools there (interestingly enough many others in Russia).

Are you not an icon lover then? I'm not particularly religious, and was brought within the Scottish presbyterian church which is very spartan with virtually no imagery at all. However, I like icons, and admire the artwork involved. Which of your interests requires a knowledge of linseed oil? Sounds intriguing.............

And what is the name of the egg yolk/marble French painter? I'd like to see some of his/her work.

Talisker

Sounds interesting, I'm presuming these are (natural) oil-based paints, with colours produced from various powdered minerals, plants, etc? Would the monasteries on Mount Athos be a centre for iconography apprenticeships?

A friend's nephew in Larnaca paints icons. He showed us around his studio, the pictures were absolutely stunning. All his materials are traditional, he uses egg yolk and ground up rock for the paint. I don't think its his main occupation, more of a hobby. I'm not sure what training he had, he seemed very casual about the whole business - a very talented young man.

Jerry, is the studio open to visitors, and if so do you have any details? I'd like to visit sometime.

Talisker,

The Franch painter is Michel Legoff, he used to live and work in Hydra island in Greece. I think painting was a late development, he was a property dealer/agent when I first met him. I then happened to be on the island when he was showing his first collection of paintings. The surface of marble paints has an amazing texture.

Linseed oil used in finishing wood is my interest. My iconographer friend taught me the basics that wood finishers often forget, ie that linseed is a drying oil so the greater surface presented to the air the faster the drying. Ergo, the thinner each coat the faster the drying.

Well if he was a late starter he has developed an impressive portfolio judging from his excellent website:
http://legoff.com/
Are the marble paintings the ones he describes as 'Kymatic art'? Some of them have that translucent quality often seen in icons.

Are you a wood carver (sculptor) or carpenter? My main association of linseed oil with wood is for the maintenance of cricket bats! Although I am no expert on cricket, a good bat requires 'hardening' before use and it is recommended that raw linseed oil is used, as it stays moist for longer than boiled linseed. I hadn't previously appreciated that linseed oil was a drying oil. You learn something new every day!

His studio is at his home, I hope to see his uncle in the UK in the next few weeks, he may be able to arrange a visit.

We stopped off and looked around St Raphaels some years ago. Agreed - very attractive location.
