The inside of the church looks stunning. It is good that the monks on mount Athos carry on the old 'icon painting' traditions. The setting of this church is also magnificent with the blue Maditerranean sea in the background. I will make a point of visiting this church when in Cyprus. I might take my brother-in-law who is an architect, and did his thesis on Cypriot Byzantine Churches. GR has met the gentleman I talk about. I dont know if they touched on the topic.

Sounds interesting, I'm presuming these are (natural) oil-based paints, with colours produced from various powdered minerals, plants, etc? Would the monasteries on Mount Athos be a centre for iconography apprenticeships?


A friend's nephew in Larnaca paints icons. He showed us around his studio, the pictures were absolutely stunning. All his materials are traditional, he uses egg yolk and ground up rock for the paint. I don't think its his main occupation, more of a hobby. I'm not sure what training he had, he seemed very casual about the whole business - a very talented young man.
