No problem, Tess, these are the only images I could find on the web, and although they are pretty good, like most photographs they do not do justice to reality. By chance I met the architect in Paphos many years ago, but hadn't visited the church at that time and didn't have the bundle of questions for him I now have. I hope you get the chance to visit St Raphael church sometime - it really is worth it.

Talisker

I visited the old Kykkos monastery in Troodos where they also have a museum, have you been there?

Yes, but around 20 years ago when I was less interested in cultural matters. We visited with a group of friends and my main memory is trying to stifle hysterical laughter as we looked round - not because of the monastery, but because we were all made to wear dressing gowns as our dress was considered immodest - it was the height of the summer and we were all in T-shirts and shorts. We looked ridiculous in those gowns! So I don't remember any frescoes, or other iconography, there.

It happened on both sides - so don't just cry and moan about what happened in the North.

Both sides have done it and it was and is not acceptable.

Both sides have done what? The churches ransacked in the north were priceless, not only in their decor and architecture but also in the artifacts they contained...

For those who don't know it, this is quite a new church (early 1990s), and has the most amazing location and internal frescoes - fascinating depictions of biblical scenes with stunning, almost translucent, colours, and some amazing 3D effects. As there was a service underway I did not feel free to take any photographs but found some on the web for those of you who are interested (see below). I've been impressed by many frescoes I've seen before in ancient Orthodox churches, but was really excited by the modern, fresh style within the St Raphael church. Does anyone know who would have painted these frescoes - are these specialist painters, monks, or adaptable artists - or know of other churches in Cyprus with stunning modern frescoes?

You won't believe this but this church is the image of Ay. Rafael church in Xylotimpou, just on the green line.

The outside as well as the in. If I go past that way anytime soon I will get some photos and post them.

Must be the same people who did both !

Holy Sh*t, I shouldn't have said that, TrashinTRNC will be over now with her hench men to ransack that as well. better beef up the security.

Two for the price of one! You mentioned Xylotimpou was on the green line. Coincidentally (or not) the one I visited yesterday is very close to Kokkina. It has a stack of crutches in the body of the church - I think it is known for miracles in curing the sick and crippled. Is the church you mentioned known for similar occurances?

Oh come on - are you blind. Every TC property is still standing and every Muslim place of worship is still there - no burial ground has been sacked.

You problem is you think the GC are the only victims - which they are not. Even the SG of UN mentioned in an address to Security Council back in the 60's. Or was he just lying and being anti GC?

Nurgary, some of the Muslim places of worship maybe were not maintained and time had a toll on them, but they were not destroyed intentionally or turned into barns, bars, or military establishments, like it happened to several of our churches in the occupied areas. Even worst the Turks have stolen and sold abroad icons and other valuable items that are many 100 years old.

This is a good example of how the Turkish propaganda is trying to equate things that are very very different in magnitude.

Similarly you say that TCs suffered as well. Yes they did. For about a decade, where they lost a few 100s of people. Thats many magnitudes different from the suffering of Cypriots who have been oppressed by the Turks almost non stop for centuries and lost many many 1000s of people.

So stop trying to blame the Greek Cypriots and suggest that Cypriots deserve to have their lands stolen and their rights violated because "TCs suffered as well". What should happen instead is that finally Cyprus should be liberated from foreign oppressors, Turkey and UK should stop using the TC minority as means to weaken the sovereignty of our island and keep their troops here, and the human rights of all Cypriots should be restored without trying to find lame excuses as to why our rights should still be violated and our lands still occupied.
